Cocaína procedente de Costa Rica, incautada en Inglaterra
El alijo está valorado en 90 millones de libras esterlinas, unos ₡77.434 millones.
La Agencia Nacional de Crimen del Reino Unido (NCA, por sus siglas en inglés) localizó en el puerto de Sheerness en Kent, al este de Londres, 1,2 toneladas de cocaína que estaban escondidas en cajas de bananos procedentes de Costa Rica, un alijo valorado en 90 millones de libras esterlinas unos ₡77.434 millones.
La operación que fue catalogada por las autoridades como un golpe al crimen organizado y se llevó a cabo usando un operador de puerto infiltrado, ocurrió el pasado 20 de diciembre. En ella participaron más de 100 oficiales que intervinieron la terminal.
De acuerdo con el comunicado de la NCA, en la operación fue detenido un hombre de 27 años que laboraba como guardia de seguridad en el puerto, así como otros 5 hombres ligados al trasiego, mientras que otra persona fue aprehendida en su casa de habitación en Hertfordshire.
“Los investigadores de la NCA creen que las drogas habrían llegado en un barco desde Costa Rica y estaban escondidas dentro de un cargamento de plátanos. El botín tiene un valor estimado en la calle de más de 90 millones de libras esterlinas”, indicó la entidad en un comunicado de prensa.
“La ‘amenaza interna’ o los ‘habilitadores corruptos’ son una prioridad para la NCA. Vender el conocimiento de los sistemas o permitir el acceso a áreas restringidas permite a los OCG contrabandear productos ilícitos como armas de fuego o drogas, o el movimiento de personas y niños vulnerables a través del crimen de inmigración organizado”, agregó.
Según recoge una publicación de BBC News los acusados son: Michael Turner, de 54 años; Kyle Davidson, de 30 años; Danny Laird, de 38 años; Ian Woodward, de 33 años, Joel McCaughey, de 31 años; Darren Laurie, de 50 años y Sam Elphick, de 27 años.
Los sospechosos serán acusados de importación de drogas clase A.
