La NASA perdió contacto con astronauta que lleva 10 meses varado en el espacio
El astronauta Frank Rubio, de ascendencia latina, perdió comunicación con los ingenieros de la NASA en la Tierra.
A causa de un corte de energía, la NASA, la agencia espacial de los Estados Unidos, perdió contacto con todos sus astronautas en la Estación Espacial Internacional (EEI). Entre ellos se encuentra Frank Rubio, quien lleva 10 meses varado en el espacio por defectos en la cápsula que lo debía traer de regreso a la Tierra.
El incidente, ocurrido el martes 25 de julio a las 8 a. m., hora local, obligó a la NASA a solicitar apoyo de la agencia espacial rusa Roscosmos y sus sistemas de comunicación para poder contactar con sus enviados al espacio.
Además de Rubio y sus compañeros Woody Hoburg y Stephen Bowen, en la estación espacial se encuentran los cosmonautas rusos Andrey Fedyaev y Sergey Prokopyev, y el astronauta emiratí Sultan Alneyadi.
¿Por qué se perdió el contacto con los astronautas?
«En preparación para estos incidentes, tenemos un sistema de comando y control de respaldo que usaríamos si tuviéramos que cerrar el centro por una emergencia climática, especialmente importante durante la temporada de huracanes» agregó.
Por primera vez, desde que la EEI entró en pleno funcionamiento en 2009, la NASA tuvo que recurrir a sus sistemas de control de respaldo para restablecer las comunicaciones con los astronautas a bordo.
Según la agencia espacial estadounidense, todos los sistemas volvieron a la normalidad 90 minutos después de la falla. Asimismo, Montalbano aclaró que «en ningún momento la tripulación o la EEI estuvieron en peligro».
Ahora, la NASA se encuentra investigando el incidente para asegurarse de que no se repita en la posteridad.
Frank Rubio, el astronauta que no puede volver a la Tierra
La interrupción de las comunicaciones no es el primer contratiempo que enfrenta el astronauta Frank Rubio, de 47 años.
Rubio, de padres salvadoreños, llegó a la EEI en septiembre de 2022 a bordo de la nave rusa Soyuz MS-22. El plan era que retorno en el mismo vehículo en marzo de 2023, pero este presentó una falla en el sistema de refrigeración. Lo mismo se detectó en la nave de rescate que enviaron.
Finalmente, Roscosmos consiguió enviar una nave totalmente operativa, la Soyuz MS-23, a la EEI el pasado 24 de febrero, con media tonelada de carga (víveres, ropa y artículos para limpiar la estación). Es en esta nave que Rubio podrá volver, pero tendrá que esperar hasta septiembre de este año, cuando los cosmonautas Prokopiev y Petelin terminen su misión y estén listos para retornar junto con él.
Así, lo que en principio iba a ser una estancia de seis meses para Rubio se convertirá en un año, lo que a su vez marcará un nuevo récord: el estadounidense que más tiempo ha pasado en el espacio durante una sola misión.
