Se desconoce el motivo por el que el piloto del avión de 80 millones de dólares se eyectó en pleno vuelo.
El ejército de Estados Unidos busca un avión caza F-35 que desapareció después de que el piloto se eyectara. La imposibilidad de rastrearlo suscita asombro y burlas a partes iguales en un país que se pregunta cómo se puede perder un caza que cuesta 80 millones de dólares.
La Base Conjunta de Charleston (JBC) ha hecho un llamado en las redes sociales para pedir información sobre el F-35 que desapareció el domingo cuando sobrevolaba Carolina del Sur (este).
El F-35 Lightning II es un avión muy codiciado, especialmente por Ucrania, porque su forma y características impiden que pueda ser detectado por radar.
Este lunes sigue sin saberse qué ha pasado.
El piloto se eyectó por razones desconocidas en paracaídas en un barrio de North Charleston, dejando al avión volando en «estado zombi», es decir con piloto automático.
El portavoz de la JBC, Jeremy Huggins, declaró al Washington Post que el transpondedor (aparato que emite señales) del avión no funcionaba, lo cual dificulta el seguimiento.

No es la primera vez que un avión de combate desaparece.
En 1989 el piloto de un MiG-23 soviético se eyectó sobre Polonia y el avión siguió volando con el piloto automático hasta que se estrelló en Bélgica, a más de 900 kilómetros de distancia.
La desaparición de un avión que cuesta al menos 80 millones de dólares llenó internet de mensajes de estupor.
«¿Cómo demonios se pierde un F-35? ¿Cómo es posible que no haya un dispositivo de seguimiento y se esté pidiendo a la opinión pública que encuentre un avión y lo entregue?», comentó la congresista republicana Nancy Mace.
Algunos internautas publicaron fotografías manipuladas con falsos avisos de búsqueda colgados en árboles: «F-35 desaparecido. Recompensa de 500 dólares», se lee en una de ellas.
Otros se burlaron de la situación ironizando con que lo tiene el presidente de Ucrania, Volodimir Zelenski, quien lleva meses pidiendo este tipo de aviones para la guerra que libra contra Rusia desde que tropas rusas invadieran su país.
