Condenan a 18 años de cárcel a mujer que tiró a su bebé recién nacido a contenedor de basura
Alexis Ávila fue procesada por abuso infantil con grave daño físico tras dejar a su hijo en el basurero de un centro comercial en Hobbs, cerca de la frontera con Texas.
Una mujer de Nuevo México, Estados Unidos, fue sentenciada a 18 años de cárcel por arrojar a su bebé recién nacido al contenedor de basura de un centro comercial, causándole graves daños físicos. La defensa de la madre de 19 años argumentó que ella tiene una condición de salud mental y la edad que tenía cuando abandonó a su hijo; sin embargo, no evitó la pena privativa de la libertad.
Durante el juicio, el jurado condenó a Alexis Ávila por abuso infantil, lo cual involucró graves daños en el cuerpo del infante. El abogado defensor de la joven insistió en que ella tiene un trastorno de salud mental no diagnosticado que jugó un papel importante en la decisión que tomó.
Según dijo el juez William Shoobridge, durante el juicio, afortunadamente el bebé sobrevivió tras soportar el invierno durante varias horas hasta ser encontrado por transeúntes, de lo contrario se discutiría una pena por asesinato.
“Te has dado una cadena perpetua por saber lo que hiciste con tu hijo”, le dijo a la acusada. “Y también le ha dado a su hijo la misma cadena perpetua, y eso es probablemente algo con lo que es tan difícil lidiar como cualquier período de tiempo que pueda tener en prisión”, añadió.
Hallazgo del bebé
Agentes de la Policía indicaron que un grupo de personas buscaba en el contenedor de basura cuando escucharon ruidos y pensaron que era un perro o un gato. Rompieron una bolsa de basura y hallaron a un bebé adentro. De inmediato, intentaron mantener al niño abrigado hasta la llegada de los paramédicos.
Los investigadores revisaron las cámaras de seguridad de la calle, donde identificaron a un auto sospechoso. Esto los llevó a dar con el paradero de Alexis Ávila y su posterior captura.
