Durante una cumbre organizada por el diario The Wall Street Journal, el martes 6 de octubre, habló de los efectos del tratamiento que recibió el presidente de Estados Unidos, para contrarrestar el Covid-19. Gates sostuvo que las drogas con anticuerpos podrían reducir drásticamente la tasa de mortalidad de la pandemia, según The Wall Street Journal
La terapia que se le aplicó al presidente Trump consistió en anticuerpos monoclonales, antivirales y dexametasona. Según la revista Science, Trump recibió un “coctel de anticuerpos” que actúan directamente contra la proteína del virus que causa la Covid-19.
Además de los anticuerpos policlonales, Trump estuvo tomando zinc, vitamina D, famotidina, melatonina y una aspirina diaria, según un comunicado de la Casa Blanca. Gates, respecto al tratamiento, dijo que se mostró muy prometedor en pacientes en etapa temprana. “Eso es realmente muy emocionante… la reducción en la tasa de mortalidad allí podría ser bastante alta, y habrá un gran volumen para fin de año, al menos en los países ricos”, según The Wall Street Journal.
El medicamento en cuestión se inyecta por vía intravenosa en una persona infectada con coronavirus, pero únicamente si está levemente enferma. Los científicos creen que la costosa terapia también es prometedora como herramienta preventiva, ya que bloquean la infección temporalmente.
Regeneron Pharmaceuticals es el laboratorio que está produciendo el ‘coctel de anticuerpos’ y se encuentra en etapa experimental. Según Bill Gates, volver a “lo mas parecido a la normalidad” una vez que la vacuna esté disponible y «eliminando y parando el virus completamente» puede tomar de dos a tres años. Sin embargo, con la obtención de bastantes vacunas, en países ricos puede llegar a finales del 2021, en el mejor de los casos. El filántropo enfatizó la necesidad de una vacunación masiva en la población.
De acuerdo con The Wall Street Journal, Gates cree que “habrá suficiente gente interesada» en vacunarse. “Luego construirás esa confianza a medida que más y más personas estén tomando la vacuna y obteniendo buenos resultados”, señaló.
Regeneron y la compañía farmacéutica Eli Lilly and Co. solicitaron a la Administración de Drogas y Alimentos de Estados Unidos una autorización de uso de emergencia para sus productos.
Los primeros datos de los ensayos clínicos del anticuerpo monoclonal de Eli Lilly and Co. indican una reducción del 60% en las tasas de hospitalización, dijo Gates. Dijo que Lilly espera poder tratar a los pacientes con dosis muy bajas de las proteínas del sistema inmunológico diseñadas en el laboratorio.
Gates contó que los tratamientos monoclonales pueden terminar siendo mucho más baratos que las fórmulas que se usan ahora para tratar el cáncer, la artritis reumatoide y otras afecciones. Esos tratamientos pueden costar cientos de miles de dólares al año, dijo Gates.
