Luego de los desastres ocacionados por los incendios forestales en Australia, el koala esá siendo considerado ser incluido en la lista de animales en peligro de extinción, ya que su habitat está en contínua desctrucción.
La icónica especie se encuentra entre los 28 animales que podrían mejorar su estado de amenaza, según el ministro federal de Medio Ambiente de Australia, Sussan Ley. Además, también se está evaluando cambiar su estado «vulnerable» a «en peligro de extinción», mientras que varias especies de ranas y peces está siendo considerados para calificarlos como «en peligro crítico».
Ley ha realizado un pedido al comité científico de especies amenazadas que complete sus evaluaciones para octubre del próximo año.
La evaluación al koala se aplicará a todas las poblaciones de esta especie en Nueva Gales del Sur, Queensland y toda el área capital australiana, donde más del 10% de la población se vio afectado por .
Actualmente, el gobierno australiano tiene un proyecto de ley ante el parlamento para transferir a los estados los poderes de toma de decisión en virtud de las leyes ambientales nacionales.
