El coronavirus arrastra a la economía de Nueva Zelanda a la recesión
Consideran que el cierre de las fronteras del archipiélago desde el 19 de marzo debido a la pandemia de coronavirus tuvo un impacto enorme en varios sectores de la economía.
La economía de Nueva Zelanda registró una caída récord durante el segundo trimestre de 2020, que la hizo entrar en recesión, a causa de la crisis provocada por la pandemia de covid-19, según los datos oficiales publicados el miércoles.
“La caída de 12,2% del producto interior bruto en el trimestre es, de lejos, la más importante registrada en Nueva Zelanda”, declaró la agencia nacional de estadísticas.
El segundo trimestre coincidió con la aplicación de un confinamiento estricto, que empezó a finales de marzo y fue levantado dos meses después.
El portavoz de la agencia, Paul Pascoe, consideró además que el cierre de las fronteras del archipiélago desde el 19 de marzo tuvo un impacto enorme en varios sectores de la economía.
“Industrias como el comercio minorista, la hotelería, la restauración y los transportes registraron caídas significativas en sus ingresos, pues se encontraban entre las más afectadas por la prohibición de los viajes internacionales y el confinamiento estricto que se impuso”, indicó.
“Otras industrias, como las de productos alimentarios y de bebidas sufrieron mucho menos ese periodo”, agregó Pascoe.
El archipiélago había registrado una bajada del 1,6% de su producto interior bruto en los tres primeros meses del año, por lo que el país entró oficialmente en recesión.
Con todo, la contracción de 12,2% es menor a la que esperaba el gobierno (16%) y casi la mitad de la anticipada durante la presentación del presupuesto, en mayo pasado (23,5%).
El ministro de Finanzas, Grant Robertson, destacó las medidas puestas en marcha por el gobierno de Jacinda Ardern, que espera revalidarse en el puesto de primera ministra tras las elecciones del 17 de octubre.
“Actuar fuerte y rápidamente significa que podemos volver más rápido y más fuerte”, insistió, asegurando que “los economistas esperan un récord de crecimiento para el tercer trimestre”.
