Efectos en Satélites de Órbita Baja
Un estudio preliminar realizado por el Instituto Tecnológico de Massachusetts (MIT) ha revelado que la radiación de esta tormenta solar causó perturbaciones importantes en los satélites que operan en la órbita terrestre baja (LEO). Estos satélites, que orbitan a altitudes de entre 500 y 1.500 km, son cruciales para la toma de imágenes de alta resolución y para la operación de la Estación Espacial Internacional (EEI).
Desafíos para la Infraestructura Satelital
La tormenta geomagnética alteró las trayectorias de los satélites, complicando la capacidad de estos dispositivos para prevenir colisiones. «La tormenta produjo perturbaciones grandes e impredecibles en las trayectorias de los satélites en la órbita terrestre baja», señala el informe del MIT. Esta situación plantea un reto significativo para el mantenimiento de las estaciones y la prevención de desfases en las órbitas, especialmente con el creciente número de constelaciones satelitales como Starlink.
Impacto en las Constelaciones Satelitales
El mantenimiento automático de estaciones, una práctica común en la constelación Starlink, llevó a que casi la mitad de los satélites activos en LEO realizaran maniobras simultáneas en respuesta a la tormenta solar. Esta combinación de arrastre impredecible y maniobras masivas dificultó la identificación de posibles colisiones durante y después de la tormenta.

Las erupciones solares, poderosas explosiones de energía, pueden afectar las comunicaciones por radio, las redes eléctricas y representar riesgos para las naves espaciales y los astronautas.

Las tormentas geomagnéticas pueden interferir con la infraestructura orbital terrestre y los sistemas en la superficie de la Tierra, incluyendo las comunicaciones, la red de energía eléctrica y las operaciones de navegación. Aunque estos eventos pueden tener un gran impacto, es difícil predecir cuándo ocurrirán. «Hay más probabilidad de que ocurran en los próximos meses, ya que el Sol se va acercando al máximo solar, que será en un par de años», aclara Vargas.
