De Huracán a Tormenta Tropical
Inicialmente un huracán, Beryl perdió fuerza y fue degradado a tormenta tropical en la madrugada del lunes después de tocar tierra en el sureste de Texas el domingo. Según el Servicio Meteorológico Nacional (NWS, por sus siglas en inglés), se espera que la tormenta siga avanzando hacia el centro del país y la región de los Grandes Lagos. Aunque su intensidad disminuirá, las autoridades advierten sobre posibles inundaciones a lo largo del estado y en las costas.
Riesgo de Tornados y Destrucción
El NWS también emitió alertas de tornados para el este de Texas y el oeste de Luisiana. La ciudad de Houston, la más grande de Texas, ha sido una de las áreas más afectadas. Las autoridades locales reportaron cuatro muertes, incluyendo la de un oficial de policía, Russell Richardson, de 54 años, quien falleció tras quedar atrapado en su automóvil en una inundación.
Apagón Masivo y Esfuerzos de Recuperación
El vicegobernador de Texas, Dan Patrick, informó en una rueda de prensa que más de 2,7 millones de personas en todo el estado están sin electricidad. La compañía eléctrica CenterPoint Energy, responsable del suministro en Houston, comunicó que la tormenta impactó a sus clientes más de lo previsto, dejando a más de 2,26 millones de personas sin servicio este lunes.
«Estamos movilizando todos nuestros recursos para comenzar el proceso de restaurar la energía a nuestros clientes de manera rápida y segura”, declaró Lynnae Wilson, vicepresidenta de CenterPoint Energy, en un comunicado.
Historia de Devastación
Antes de su llegada a Estados Unidos, Beryl alcanzó la máxima categoría en la escala Saffir-Simpson (nivel 5) en el Caribe, donde provocó muerte y destrucción. Luego, la tormenta tocó tierra en Tulum, México, en la madrugada del viernes.
