Mujer recibe diagnóstico terminal para sus 3 hijos: ‘Vete a casa y ámalos, no hay tratamiento’
Todos los hijos de Renee Staska tienen la enfermedad de Niemann-Pick tipo C, que suele aparecer en la primera infancia y la esperanza promedio de vida es de 9 años. Médicos solo ofrecen cuidados paliativos.
Renee Staska recibió un diagnóstico devastador tras llevar al hospital al último de sus hijos, quien se había desarrollado normalmente desde su nacimiento hasta el primer año de vida, cuando empezaron los elevados niveles de enzimas o proteínas hepáticas, que no respondían al tratamiento. El equipo médico decidió realizar algunas pruebas genéticas, las cuales determinaron finalmente el padecimiento del niño.
«Austin era bastante perfecto cuando nació a las 38 semanas. Sólo sus enzimas hepáticas estaban un poco elevadas», señaló la madre de 31 años, quien vive al lado de su familia en Australia. Tras los exámenes médicos, se comunicaron con ella para explicarle los resultados. «Me llamaron y me dijeron que habían encontrado Niemann-Pick tipo C. Era un diagnóstico terminal», recuerda, en diálogo con BBC News.
La joven madre asimilaba la noticia, cuando decidió hacer las mismas pruebas médicas a sus dos hijos mayores, Hudson (4 años) y Holly (2 años). Resultó que ellos tenían la misma condición de su hermano menor. «Me estaba recuperando de esta noticia cuando el médico me dijo: ‘No busques en Google, simplemente vete a casa y ámalos, porque no hay tratamiento ni cura. No hay nada que puedas hacer'», narró.
