El tirador, Ryan Christopher Palmeter, vivía con sus padres en un suburbio de Jacksonville, dijo el sheriff T.K. Waters en una rueda de prensa. Murió de una herida de bala autoinfligida.
“No había antecedentes penales, nada”, dijo Waters, añadiendo que lo único que constaba en el expediente era una llamada por violencia doméstica con su hermano. “No había banderas rojas”.
Sin embargo, el sheriff dijo que Palmeter en 2017 fue retenido brevemente bajo una ley estatal llamada Ley Baker, que establece que una persona puede ser “llevada a un centro receptor para un examen involuntario” durante una crisis de salud mental.

Un crimen de odio
El Departamento de Justicia está investigando el tiroteo como un delito de odio y un “acto de extremismo violento por motivos raciales”, dijo el fiscal general Merrick Garland en un comunicado.
Waters dijo que el sospechoso fue grabado en vídeo disparando a Angela Michelle Carr, una mujer de 52 años, en su coche a la salida del Dollar General, una cadena de descuento estadounidense.
