Soldado estadounidense que cruzó la frontera pidió asilo a Corea del Norte
Según la prensa oficial norcoreana, Travis King tomó esta decisión ‘por el tratamiento inhumano y la discriminación racial dentro del Ejército de Estados Unidos’.
Corea del Norte se encuentra «investigando» al soldado estadounidense que cruzó su frontera el mes pasado, según los medios estatales de Pyongyang, que añadieron que el militar ha pedido asilo en el país tras sentirse maltratado en el Ejército de Estados Unidos.
«Travis King (nombre del soldado estadounidense) ha confesado que decidió venir a la República Popular Democrática de Corea (denominación oficial del país) debido a que albergaba malestar por el tratamiento inhumano y la discriminación racial dentro del Ejército de Estados Unidos», señaló hoy en una nota la agencia estatal KCNA.
Pyongyang, no obstante, se encontraba en contacto con Estados Unidos sobre la situación del soldado, quien se cree que se encuentra detenido por el régimen desde que cruzó la frontera, según habían señalado el Pentágono y el Mando de las Naciones Unidas en Corea.
Travis King «entró de forma ilegal en el territorio» de Corea del Norte el pasado día 18 y «quedó bajo control de soldados» norcoreanos tras haber entrado deliberadamente en la zona norcoreana al otro lado de la línea de demarcación militar, según la KCNA.
Pedido de asilo
El Pentágono afirmó a finales del mes pasado que no había registrado progresos ni en los contactos ni en posibles negociaciones con Corea del Norte sobre el soldado, y que desconocía en qué estado se encontraba.
Travis King, de 23 años, cruzó la frontera al Norte después de haber pasado 48 días en un taller penitenciario de Corea del Sur debido a que no pagó la multa que se le impuso en febrero por patear y dañar un coche de policía en Seúl.
Como medida disciplinaria, Washington decidió repatriarlo, pero Travis King huyó del aeropuerto internacional de Incheon, que da servicio a Seúl, donde debía tomar un vuelo de regreso Estados Unidos, y al día siguiente reservó una visita turística a la JSA que aprovechó para cruzar a Corea del Norte.
