La policía de Australia acusó el miércoles (17 de mayo) a un camionero de 49 años por una colisión importante con un autobús escolar cerca de Melbourne que hospitalizó a 18 estudiantes, siete de los cuales sufrieron heridas graves y algunos requirieron amputaciones de extremidades.
El autobús escolar que transportaba al menos a 45 estudiantes volcó después de ser golpeado por detrás por un camión justo antes de las 4 p.m. del martes 16 de mayo en Eynesbury, a unos 40 km al oeste de Melbourne, la capital del estado de Victoria, Australia.

El accidente ocurrió mientras los niños se dirigían a casa desde la Escuela Primaria Exford , cerca de la intersección de Exford Road y Murphys Road
En la escena del accidente el martes, se vio a los servicios de emergencia sacando a los niños atrapados de los escombros, y el superintendente de policía de Victoria, Michael Cruse, describió la escena como “horrible”, y agregó que varios de los heridos habían recibido “lesiones que les cambiaron la vida”.
La directora ejecutiva del Royal Children’s Hospital, Bernadette Mcdonald, dijo el miércoles por la mañana que los niños admitidos tenían entre cinco y 11 años, con lesiones que incluían brazos amputados, extremidades aplastadas y laceraciones graves en la cabeza y el cuerpo.
Chofer responsable compareció ante el Tribunal de Australia
El conductor Jamie Gleeson, de 49 años, de Balliang East, quien impactó al autobús escolar, compareció hoy ante el Tribunal de Magistrados de Melbourne, Australia, donde enfrentó cuatro cargos de conducción peligrosa que causaron lesiones graves por el accidente en Eynesbury . Se alega que Gleeson estaba al volante de un camión que chocó con un autobús escolar que transportaba a 45 estudiantes de la escuela primaria de Exford.
El fiscal Ben Kerlin dijo que el conductor del autobús había notado que el camión se acercaba rápidamente por detrás antes de que lo golpearan alrededor de las 3:40 p.m.
Porqué ocurrió el accidente
Gleeson, un camionero durante 18 años, le dijo a la policía que normalmente “se lo tomaría con calma” en las zonas escolares y estaba acelerando fuera de la zona de 60 km/h fuera de la escuela primaria Exford cuando notó destellos de luz solar que entraban a través de los árboles.
Dijo que frenó después de ver las luces de freno en el autobús frente a él, pero que no tuvo suficiente tiempo para detenerse antes de golpear la parte trasera.
“Si hubiera podido desviarme, lo habría hecho”, dijo a los oficiales durante su entrevista con la policía el miércoles por la mañana.
Su abogado dijo que esta era la primera vez que Gleeson estaba bajo custodia y que no tenía antecedentes de manejo u otros asuntos criminales.
Conceden libertad bajo fianza a chofer implicado
El magistrado Andrew McKenna accedió a conceder la libertad bajo fianza a Gleeson y señaló que habría una demora en llevar el caso a los tribunales.
