Revocan aprobación de píldora abortiva en Estados Unidos tras fallo en Texas
La suspensión de la mifepristona deja en vilo el acceso al aborto en EE.UU. y pone en jaque los derechos reproductivos.
El juez federal de Texas, Matthew Kacsmaryk, ha revocado la aprobación de la píldora abortiva mifespristona en todo Estados Unidos. El fallo, no obstante, da a los representantes legales del Gobierno de Joe Biden una semana para apelar la decisión. En el texto judicial, el juez alega que la FDA violó el procedimiento adecuado al dar su aprobación a la mifepristona y que no tuvo en cuenta los impactos negativos del fármaco en la salud de las personas que lo toman.
La vicepresidenta Kamala Harris ha criticado la decisión judicial al considerar que sienta un «peligroso precedente» y que es contrario a lo que dicta una buena política pública permitir a las cortes y a los políticos decir a la FDA qué hacer. Por su parte, Planned Parenthood ha rechazado la medida al considerar que se trata de una «medida sin precedentes y profundamente perjudicial», mientras que la organización conservadora Alliance Defending Freedom ha celebrado la medida como una «importante victoria».
Desde que la Corte Suprema de EE.UU. revocó el fallo Roe v. Wade, que protegía el acceso al aborto a nivel nacional en junio del año pasado, el uso de estas dos píldoras ha aumentado, según datos de la Instituto Guttmacher. Según el reporte de esta organización, los abortos medicados correspondieron en 2022 al 54 % de todos los abortos en el país.
La mifepristona fue aprobada por la FDA como un método abortivo en el año 2000 y, junto con el misoprostol, son conocidos como la «píldora abortiva» o el aborto medicado. La decisión del juez Kacsmaryk ha generado críticas en varios sectores, especialmente en los defensores de los derechos reproductivos y la libertad de elección de las mujeres, quienes consideran que esta medida pone en riesgo la salud de las personas que necesitan acceder al aborto seguro y legal en Estados Unidos.
