La noticia fue confirmada este lunes por el Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores y de Culto (MREC).
El MREC indica en un comunicado de prensa que el protocolo vaticano no tiene prevista la participación de Jefes de Estado, salvo los casos de Italia y Alemania, la Cancillería precisó que en las honras fúnebres que se realizarán la mañana del próximo jueves en la Basílica de San Pedro, Costa Rica estará representada por Villegas.
Desde este lunes y hasta el próximo miércoles a las 7 p.m. (hora de Roma) el Vaticano tendrá abiertas las puertas de la Basílica de San Pedro para que los fieles puedan dar a su santidad emérita, el último adiós.
“El ambiente en los alrededores de la Plaza de San Pedro es de suma tristeza y dolor ante la sensible pérdida de quien la iglesia Católica considera uno de los teólogos más grandes que ha dado la historia”, indicó la Cancillería.
El papa emérito Benedicto XVI murió en la víspera de Año Nuevo, el pasado 31 de diciembre, a la edad de 95 años, casi una década después de su renuncia.
El sábado de la semana anterior, el gobierno de Costa Rica lamentó la muerte del papa emérito Benedicto XVI y decretó cuatro días de duelo nacional.
“Este período obedece a un duelo de cortesía, por quien fuera la máxima autoridad de la religión del Estado costarricense”, señala la nota oficial divulgada por Casa Presidencial.
