Cien especialistas en ciencia, política y práctica en nicotina, solicitan de forma urgente a la OMS reducir los fallecimientos causados por el tabaco fumado.

En la última década, la innovación en el mercado del tabaco y la nicotina ha hecho que ahora haya muchos productos a base de nicotina disponibles que no implican la combustión de la hoja de tabaco ni la inhalación de humo.
Entre estos productos sin humo se encuentran los productos de vapeo, las nuevas bolsas de nicotina oral, los productos de tabaco calentado y el tabaco sin humo con bajo contenido en nitrosinas, como el snus.
Los cigarrillos y otros productos de tabaco para fumar son responsables de la gran mayoría de los fallecimientos causados por el consumo de tabaco en el mundo. Los productos de nicotina sin humo ofrecen una vía prometedora para reducir los daños derivados del tabaquismo.
Existen pruebas convincentes de que los productos sin humo son mucho menos perjudiciales que los cigarrillos y que pueden desplazar al tabaquismo en el plano individual y en el de la población.
Reconocemos que existe incertidumbre frente a los beneficios y riesgos asociados con la evolución del mercado de los productos de tabaco sin combustión a largo plazo, y que existe un continuo de riego en estos productos.
También somos debidamente cautelosos con la participación de la industria del tabaco. Sin embargo, también debemos tener en cuenta el importante conjunto de pruebas que tenemos y no permitir que la excesiva precaución o las incertidumbres residuales nieguen a los fumadores opciones prometedoras para abandonar los productos combustibles que sabemos con certeza que son letales.
“La OMS ha desestimado el potencial para transformar el mercado del tabaco de productos de alto riesgo a productos de bajo riesgo”.
Ellos han escrito los siguientes siete puntos para evitar muertes relacionadas con el tabaquismo.
1. La reducción de los daños del tabaco presenta importantes oportunidades para la salud pública
Quince ex presidentes de la principal sociedad académica profesional en este campo, la Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco (SRNT), han escrito un ensayo científico en el que abogan por un reequilibrio en la política del tabaco para aprovechar las oportunidades de los productos de riesgo reducido. Los autores, algunos de los expertos más creíbles a nivel mundial, abordan muchos conceptos erróneos sobre los riesgos para la salud, los efectos de escalada, el consumo en los jóvenes y la adicción.
2. Los cigarrillos electrónicos son un motor para dejar de fumar
Desde la COP8, se han seguido acumulando pruebas que apoyan el papel que desempeñan los cigarrillos electrónicos en la reducción del tabaquismo. En particular, la Revisión Cochrane, que proporciona una síntesis de pruebas de ensayos clínicos de renombre mundial, concluye en septiembre de 2021:
3)Los cigarrillos electrónicos con nicotina probablemente ayuden a las personas a dejar de fumar durante al menos seis meses. Probablemente funcionen mejor que la terapia de sustitución de nicotina y los cigarrillos electrónicos sin nicotina. Es posible que funcionen mejor que la ausencia de apoyo, o que el apoyo conductual por sí solo, y que no se asocien a efectos no deseados graves.
Los resultados del ensayo se apoyan en estudios de observación, tendencias de la población, datos del mercado y testimonios de los usuarios.
4) En conjunto, los resultados demuestran que las alternativas sin humo a los cigarrillos sustituyen el tabaquismo. La Red de Tratamiento del Tabaquismo de la SRNT argumentó recientemente:
5)Las estrategias utilizadas para el abandono de los productos combustibles pueden adaptarse a los nuevos productos, y las recomendaciones de tratamiento para el trastorno por consumo de tabaco deben realizarse en el contexto de un marco de reducción de daños en el que el uso de productos alternativos puede ser el resultado deseado.
