Niños Menores de 4 Años, los Más Afectados por Virus Respiratorios
Aumento Preocupante de Infecciones Respiratorias en Niños Menores de 4 Años
Las infecciones respiratorias graves siguen afectando gravemente a la población infantil, con los niños menores de 4 años siendo los más afectados. Según el Boletín Epidemiológico N°36 de la Dirección de Vigilancia de la Salud del Ministerio de Salud, más del 25% de los casos reportados por infecciones respiratorias agudas graves (IRAG) corresponden a este grupo etario.
Durante la semana reportada, se identificaron un total de 7.729 casos de IRAG en todo el país, de los cuales 1.995 eran niños menores de 4 años. Dentro de este grupo, 881 bebés de menos de un año también fueron afectados. La ministra de Salud, Mary Munive, alertó sobre el creciente problema el pasado 5 de septiembre, señalando que la capacidad del Hospital Nacional de Niños (HNN) había sido sobrepasada debido a complicaciones relacionadas con la influenza y otros virus respiratorios graves.
La situación en el hospital se ha agravado desde entonces. Para el 16 de septiembre, el número de pacientes hospitalizados alcanzó los 106, lo que representa un nivel de ocupación del 158%. Este aumento de casos ha generado una alarma en las autoridades de salud.
En cuanto a la distribución geográfica, la Zona Norte ha registrado la mayor incidencia de casos de virus respiratorios, con 389 casos por cada 100.000 habitantes, seguida de la Zona Sur, con 216. En contraste, las regiones del Caribe y Guanacaste presentan una menor incidencia, con 41 y 98 casos respectivamente.
Impacto en Adultos Mayores
Además de los niños, las personas mayores de 75 años también están siendo gravemente afectadas por las infecciones respiratorias. El boletín epidemiológico señala que el 21% de los casos reportados corresponden a adultos mayores, lo que equivale a 1.609 personas de esta edad enfrentando complicaciones respiratorias.
El rinovirus es el patógeno predominante en la mayoría de los casos, seguido del virus sincitial respiratorio y, en tercer lugar, el Covid-19, según el informe del Ministerio de Salud.
