Gobierno de Chaves Nombrará a Nuevo Embajador en Catar con Sueldo de $11,000
El presidente Rodrigo Chaves Robles y el canciller Arnoldo André Tinoco están a punto de hacer un nuevo nombramiento político en el ámbito diplomático, eligiendo al abogado Juan Carlos Esquivel Favareto como embajador de Costa Rica en Catar. Este anuncio, que se espera se concrete en los próximos días, ha generado controversia debido a la naturaleza política del nombramiento y el salario asociado.
Nombramiento Polémico
Juan Carlos Esquivel Favareto, quien recientemente recibió el beneplácito del gobierno catarí, podría ser confirmado por el Consejo de Gobierno en breve. Este nombramiento, si se materializa, representaría el noveno caso de asignación política a un puesto de embajador bajo la actual administración. Esquivel recibirá un salario mensual de $11,084, equivalente a poco más de ¢5.7 millones, para desempeñar su labor en Doha, la capital catarí.
Críticas y Controversias
La designación de Esquivel, que se encuentra al margen de la carrera diplomática tradicional, ha sido cuestionada debido a que el actual presidente, durante su campaña, criticó duramente los nombramientos políticos de embajadores realizados por administraciones anteriores. La Cancillería aún no ha respondido a la consulta sobre las razones para elegir a una persona fuera del ámbito diplomático profesional para este cargo.
La embajada costarricense en Catar ha permanecido sin embajador desde la renuncia de Álvaro Segura Ávila en marzo de 2023. Desde entonces, el diplomático Marcelo Roldán Sauma ha estado al frente como Encargado de Negocios.
Contexto Adicional
Este posible nombramiento sigue a la reciente designación de la publicista Olga Sauma Uribe como embajadora en Austria, otro caso de nombramiento político que también ha sido objeto de críticas. Sauma, al igual que Esquivel, no tiene formación diplomática y recibirá un sueldo de $10,103 al mes.
Además, la administración actual ha realizado otros siete nombramientos diplomáticos de carácter político, que incluyen embajadores en Suiza, Alemania, China, Ecuador, Estados Unidos y Guatemala, a menudo sin experiencia previa en diplomacia.
