Embajador borra vínculos políticos tras ser nombrado en Catar
El reciente nombramiento de Juan Carlos Esquivel Favareto como embajador de Costa Rica en Catar ha levantado sospechas por su vínculo con el grupo político que apoyó al presidente Rodrigo Chaves. Minutos después de que se hiciera pública la noticia, Esquivel eliminó de su perfil en redes sociales cualquier referencia a su afiliación con el grupo «Rodrigo Chaves Robles presidente 2022-2026». CRHoy pudo corroborar estos cambios tras investigar el historial de Esquivel en Facebook.
Este tipo de nombramientos ha sido criticado en el pasado por Chaves, quien se comprometió a no repetir prácticas de gobiernos anteriores relacionadas con la designación de embajadores ajenos a la carrera diplomática. Sin embargo, con este nombramiento, ya son nueve los embajadores políticos designados en distintos países bajo su administración.
A pesar de los intentos de CRHoy por obtener respuestas del Gobierno y de Esquivel sobre su designación y los motivos detrás de la eliminación de su vínculo político, ni el canciller Arnoldo André Tinoco ni Esquivel ofrecieron declaraciones al respecto.
Vínculo con Letonia y salario elevado
Esquivel, quien actualmente se desempeña como cónsul honorario de Letonia en Costa Rica, país de origen de la primera dama Signe Zeicate, ha sido objeto de críticas por su falta de experiencia en diplomacia. Cabe destacar que, en 2022, el presidente Chaves visitó Letonia, un viaje que es parte de una investigación judicial por posible influencia indebida en contra de la Hacienda Pública.
El salario que recibiría Esquivel como embajador en Catar asciende a $11.084 mensuales, lo que equivale a más de 5,7 millones de colones. La embajada costarricense en Doha ha estado sin embajador desde marzo de 2023, cuando Álvaro Segura Ávila renunció a su cargo.
Otros nombramientos polémicos
Este nuevo caso de designación política en una embajada se suma a otros ocho ya confirmados bajo la administración de Chaves, entre los que destacan:

- Alemania: Antonio Lehmann
- China: Alfredo Ortuño
- Ecuador: Paula Miranda
- Estados Unidos: Catalina Crespo
- Guatemala: Erick Ulate
- México: Pablo Heriberto Abarca (exdiputado PUSC)
A pesar de las críticas, el Gobierno ha defendido estos nombramientos, asegurando que cumplen con los requisitos necesarios para desempeñar los cargos diplomáticos.
