Disminuye el consumo de frijoles en Costa Rica: La mitad de lo que se consumía hace 20 años
En un notable cambio de hábitos alimenticios, los costarricenses están consumiendo significativamente menos frijoles en comparación con hace dos décadas.
Según datos proporcionados por la importadora de granos La Maquila Lama a Noticias Repretel, actualmente cada costarricense consume en promedio 550 gramos de frijoles al mes, lo que equivale a aproximadamente 18 gramos diarios. Esta cifra representa la mitad de la cantidad que se consumía hace 20 años.
El Consejo Nacional de Producción (CNP) ha registrado fluctuaciones en el consumo de frijoles a lo largo de los años. En 2020, el país consumió 56.783 toneladas métricas de frijoles, cifra que descendió a 47.555 toneladas métricas en 2021. Aunque el consumo aumentó a 53.004 toneladas métricas en 2022, en 2023 se registró un repunte a 55.838 toneladas métricas.
El CNP informa que solo un 20% de los frijoles consumidos en el país provienen de producción nacional, lo que resalta una dependencia creciente de las importaciones para satisfacer la demanda.
Este cambio en los patrones de consumo podría estar relacionado con la evolución de las preferencias alimenticias y la creciente disponibilidad de alternativas dietéticas.
La tendencia de menor consumo de frijoles plantea preguntas sobre el futuro de este básico alimento en la dieta costarricense y su impacto en la producción nacional.
