Costa Rica: el tercer país más pacífico de América Latina, según el Índice de Paz Global
Costa Rica es el tercer país más pacífico de América Latina en el Índice Global de la Paz (GPI, por sus siglas en inglés) de 2024, elaborado por el Instituto para la Economía y la Paz (IEP).
El Índice evalúa el entorno en 163 países con base en tres dominios de paz: conflicto interno e internacional, seguridad y protección social y militarización.
A nivel global, Costa Rica ocupa el puesto 58, mientras que en Centroamérica y el Caribe, lidera como el país más pacífico. Solo Argentina y Uruguay superan a Costa Rica en la región latinoamericana.
El ministro de Seguridad Pública, Mario Zamora Cordero, destacó este logro durante la conferencia de prensa efectuada el pasado miércoles 10 de julio.
“Pese a los embates de alta criminalidad que hemos tenido en épocas recientes, Costa Rica sigue siendo un país de paz y así es reconocido objetivamente por este índice mundial”, afirmó Zamora.
Además, anunció que más de 100 nuevos efectivos de la Fuerza Pública se incorporarán en los próximos meses para fortalecer la seguridad del país.
Desafíos de seguridad y narcotráfico
El informe del IEP señala que, a pesar de mantener su posición como el país más pacífico de la región, Costa Rica ha experimentado un ligero deterioro en su puntuación debido al aumento de manifestaciones violentas, crímenes violentos y la tasa de homicidios.
En 2023, los crímenes violentos incrementaron en un 35 % debido a cambios en los patrones de tráfico de drogas en todo el país.
El narcotráfico y las disputas políticas se presentan como los principales obstáculos para mejorar la seguridad.
A pesar del consenso gubernamental sobre la necesidad urgente de enfrentar el crimen organizado, las disputas políticas han retrasado la implementación de políticas efectivas.
“Sin embargo, ha habido mejoras en la inestabilidad política a un nivel más amplio, con el gobierno impulsando con éxito el crecimiento económico”, indica parte del informe.
El Índice de Paz Global se elabora en consulta con un panel internacional de expertos en paz y datos recopilados por Economist Intelligence Unit.
