Casi mil huevos de tortuga incautados en Tortuguero en operativos de protección
Durante recientes operativos realizados por el Sistema Nacional de Áreas de Conservación (SINAC) en el Parque Nacional Tortuguero y sus alrededores, se logró decomisar 994 huevos de tortuga verde y 2 kilogramos de carne de esta especie en peligro de extinción. Las acciones de control y vigilancia fueron realizadas en colaboración con los Comités de Vigilancia de los Recursos Naturales (Covirenas) acreditados, logrando detener a varios sospechosos que transportaban estos productos en hieleras.
Los responsables fueron puestos a disposición de la Fiscalía Adjunta de Guácimo y Pococí. Las investigaciones indican que los infractores utilizan las vías fluviales de Tortuguero para trasladar y comercializar los subproductos en negocios locales cercanos a esta área protegida.
Importancia de la conservación de la tortuga verde
David Chavarría, director ejecutivo del SINAC, destacó la relevancia del Parque Nacional Tortuguero como uno de los principales sitios de anidación de tortuga verde a nivel mundial. Chavarría subrayó que la conservación de esta especie no solo es crucial para el equilibrio de los ecosistemas, sino que también es vital para la economía local, ya que el turismo asociado a la observación de tortugas genera empleo en las comunidades de Tortuguero y San Francisco.
De junio a octubre, las tortugas verdes arriban a las playas del Caribe costarricense para reproducirse después de recorrer largas distancias migratorias. Sin embargo, su población ha ido disminuyendo debido a factores como la caza furtiva, lo que refuerza la importancia de las acciones de conservación para evitar su extinción.

El SINAC recuerda a la población que la venta de productos o subproductos derivados de la fauna silvestre es ilegal en Costa Rica. Ante cualquier sospecha o información relacionada con delitos ambientales, las personas pueden comunicarse de manera confidencial a la línea 1192 o hacer una denuncia en la página web del Sistema de Información de Delitos Ambientales (Sitada) en www.sitada.go.cr.
