Brotes de rabia paralítica encienden las alarmas en Costa Rica
Alerta en Costa Rica: Nueve Brotes de Rabia Despiertan Preocupación
El Sistema Nacional de Salud Animal (Senasa) ha encendido las alarmas al reportar la aparición de nueve brotes de rabia paralítica bovina en diversas regiones del país durante este año. Los casos han sido identificados en Alajuela, Buenos Aires de Puntarenas, Golfito y Pérez Zeledón.
La rabia paralítica bovina, una enfermedad viral transmitida principalmente por la mordedura de murciélagos infectados, está generando gran inquietud entre los productores de ganado. La gravedad del virus no solo afecta a los bovinos, sino que también puede contagiar a los humanos, creando un escenario alarmante para la salud pública y la economía ganadera.
El virus provoca síntomas neurológicos severos en los animales, como debilidad progresiva, parálisis y, finalmente, la muerte. Su rápida evolución deja poco margen para que los ganaderos puedan tomar medidas preventivas, llevando a la necesidad de sacrificar a los animales infectados.
El virólogo Carlos Jiménez, de la Universidad Nacional (UNA), ofreció una explicación sobre los pasos a seguir al detectar la enfermedad. Según Jiménez, si un animal muestra signos de infección, debe ser sacrificado para evitar la propagación. En humanos, el virus puede causar encefalitis, una inflamación del cerebro que puede llevar a la muerte en cuestión de días o semanas.
¿Qué hacer si sospechas de rabia?
En caso de sospecha de rabia en animales, es crucial notificar de inmediato a Senasa. La entidad se encargará de realizar las pruebas necesarias y, en caso de confirmarse la enfermedad, vacunará a los animales sanos para prevenir más contagios. Para los humanos, existen vacunas disponibles a través del Ministerio de Salud, y se deben solicitar de forma urgente al presentar síntomas.
Jiménez también advirtió sobre la importancia de evitar el contacto con animales enfermos, especialmente con su hocico, y recomendó que no se manipulen si muestran signos de debilidad o parálisis. Aunque la rabia urbana, transmitida por perros, es más común en otras partes del mundo, en Costa Rica la enfermedad sigue un ciclo silvestre, principalmente a través de murciélagos hematófagos.
Consejos para prevenir contagios:
- Vacunar a las mascotas con la inmunización adecuada.
- Evitar el contacto con animales enfermos.
- Informar a Senasa sobre cualquier caso sospechoso.
