Aumenta el número de vasectomías en Costa Rica
La vasectomía, un procedimiento quirúrgico para la esterilización masculina, ha ganado popularidad entre los costarricenses como una solución definitiva y segura para evitar tener más hijos. Este aumento en la demanda se enmarca en una tendencia global hacia la disminución de la natalidad, reflejada también en la sociedad costarricense.
Desde sus primeras aplicaciones hace casi dos siglos, la vasectomía ha evolucionado hasta convertirse en una intervención rápida y eficiente, que actualmente se puede realizar bajo anestesia local y sin necesidad de bisturí.
En el país, la Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social (CCSS) ofrece este procedimiento de manera gratuita, disponible para cualquier asegurado que lo solicite a través de su Ebáis.
Según datos de la CCSS, 5.608 hombres han optado por la vasectomía desde 2020, con un notable aumento del 58% en menos de cuatro años.
Durante este periodo, el Área de Salud Carmen-Montes de Oca lideró la cantidad de cirugías realizadas, con un total de 2.758 procedimientos.
Le sigue la provincia de Cartago, donde 2.601 hombres acudieron al Hospital Max Peralta para someterse a la operación.
Por otro lado, la Región Huetar Norte reporta el menor número de intervenciones, con solo 16 vasectomías registradas en el Área de Salud Los Chiles durante los últimos cuatro años.
Sorprendentemente, en Pital y el Hospital de San Carlos no se realizó ninguna operación de este tipo en el mismo período.
¿Qué implica la vasectomía?
La vasectomía consiste en cortar y sellar los conductos deferentes, los tubos que transportan los espermatozoides desde los testículos hasta la uretra, impidiendo que estos se mezclen con el semen durante la eyaculación. El resultado es una esterilización permanente, aunque existen técnicas como la vasostomía que, aunque no garantizan el éxito, ofrecen la posibilidad de revertir el procedimiento.
El urólogo Pablo Quesada destaca que la vasectomía es un procedimiento seguro y efectivo, que no afecta el rendimiento sexual ni disminuye el deseo.
“Es un método ideal para quienes no desean tener más hijos”, comentó Quesada, subrayando la simplicidad y rapidez de la intervención, que generalmente dura entre 15 y 30 minutos.
Beneficios y consideraciones
Con una tasa de éxito superior al 99%, la vasectomía se posiciona como uno de los métodos anticonceptivos más confiables. A diferencia de otros métodos que requieren mantenimiento regular, la vasectomía ofrece una solución a largo plazo sin necesidad de medidas adicionales. Además, es menos invasiva y costosa que la esterilización femenina.
No obstante, las autoridades sanitarias recomiendan el uso de preservativos para prevenir enfermedades de transmisión sexual (ETS), ya que la vasectomía no ofrece protección contra estas.
Posibles efectos secundarios y requisitos
Aunque la vasectomía es generalmente segura, puede tener efectos secundarios como dolor testicular, infecciones, hematomas o cambios psicológicos relacionados con la pérdida de fertilidad. Por ello, es fundamental que los hombres que consideren esta opción consulten con su médico para comprender todos los aspectos del procedimiento.
Para acceder al procedimiento en la CCSS, es necesario ser mayor de edad, estar en pleno uso de las facultades mentales, y haber recibido consejería en salud y derechos reproductivos.
Además, se debe firmar un consentimiento informado que refleje el conocimiento del procedimiento y sus consecuencias, incluyendo la falta de protección contra las ETS.
