Una residencia de Nueva York registra 98 muertes de ancianos por covid-19
Ya son más de 3.000 los fallecidos en asilos de la ciudad estadounidense desde el inicio de la pandemia.
El Centro Geriátrico Isabella, situado en Manhattan (Nueva York, EE.UU.) confirmó este viernes la muerte en sus instalaciones de 98 ancianos en medio de la pandemia de covid-19, informa AP.
Si bien un recuento estatal estableció 13 fallecimientos en esta residencia de ancianos, los trabajadores del centro aseguran que hasta el miércoles habían muerto 46 residentes que dieron positivo por el coronavirus, mientras que de otros 52 se sospechaba que estaban infectados. Algunos residentes fallecieron en la misma residencia, que cuenta con 705 camas, mientras que otros lo hicieron tras ser hospitalizados.
En medio de la emergencia, el centro geriátrico tuvo que pedir un camión frigorífico para almacenar los cadáveres, debido a que las funerarias están desbordadas en medio de la pandemia.
Escasez de personal
Desde la residencia señalan que, en un primer momento, tuvieron un acceso limitado a los tests, lo que les impidió detectar contagios y aislarlos. Asimismo, el centro denuncia escasez de personal, lo que les ha obligado a contratar personal externo, así como falta de equipos de protección personal para sus trabajadores.
En el geriátrico aseguran estar en permanente contacto con las familias de los ancianos, a las que informa sobre el estado de salud de sus seres queridos e incluso les permiten despedirse, tanto de manera presencial como por teléfono.
Desde el inicio del brote hasta este jueves, ya se han registrado 3.065 fallecidos en asilos neoyorquinos. A nivel estatal, ya son más de 65.000 las muertes y más de 1,1 millones los infectados, según los últimos datos actualizados de la Universidad Johns Hopkins.
