Se suicidó importante activista LGBTI que fue encarcelada, abusada y torturada en Egipto
Sarah Hegazy fue arrestada por la policía de su país tras asistir a un concierto en el cual se la vio ondeando la bandera del movimiento homosexual.
Sarah Hegazy, reconocida activista por los derechos de las personas LGBTI, se suicidó este domingo a los 30 años en Toronto (Canadá), donde estaba autoexiliada de su natal Egipto, lugar en el cual sufrió encarcelamiento, torturas y hasta abuso sexual tras presentarse con una bandera del movimiento homosexual en un concierto.
Antes de quitarse la vida, la joven dejó escrita una carta en la que pide disculpas a su colectivo por su decisión. “A mis hermanos: intenté sobrevivir, pero no pude. Perdónenme. A mis amigos: la experiencia fue demasiado dura y fui débil, perdónenme. Mundo: fuiste cruel en gran medida, pero te perdono. La prisión me mató, me destruyó”, señaló.
“Entraron en mi casa preguntándome si mantenía mi virginidad y por qué no llevaba el hiyab. Tras ello, me sometieron a una descarga eléctrica sin más presentación. Después vinieron más descargas eléctricas durante los interrogatorios, entre gritos e insultos. Animaron a mis compañeras de celda a violarme”, relataba la activista.
Tras mudarse a Canadá, Hegazy siguió denunciando la represión en su patria y respaldando los derechos de minorías como la suya. No obstante, ella también hizo conocer los efectos psicológicos que le dejaron las torturas y el maltrato sufridos.
