Reino Unido, primer país en aprobar vacuna contra Covid-19 de AstraZeneca y Oxford
La vacuna desarrollada por AstraZeneca y la Universidad de Oxford también se aplicará en México.
Gran Bretaña se convirtió este miércoles en el primer país del mundo en aprobar la vacuna contra el coronavirus desarrollada por AstraZeneca y la Universidad de Oxford, mientras lucha contra una oleada invernal impulsada por una nueva variante altamente contagiosa del virus.
El gobierno británico dijo que había aceptado una recomendación de la Agencia Reguladora de Medicamentos y Productos Sanitarios (MHRA) para conceder una autorización de emergencia.
En la Unión Europea, mientras tanto, la Autoridad Europea de Medicamentos (EMA) dijo que requiere más datos antes de poder aprobar la vacuna.
El primer ministro Boris Johnson celebró la aprobación de este medicamento para ser usado de emergencia en su país y a través de su cuenta de Twitter difundió una particular imagen de él y la vacuna de AstraZeneca y la Universida de Oxford.
“Es una noticia realmente fantástica, y un triunfo para la ciencia británica, que la vacuna de @UniofOxford /@AstraZeneca ha sido aprobada para su uso. Ahora procederemos a vacunar a la mayor cantidad de personas lo antes posible”, escribió en su cuenta de Twiiter.

El secretario de Salud de Gran Bretaña, Matt Hancock, informó que se adquirieron 100 millones de dosis de la vacuna y se planea iniciar con su aplicación el 4 de enero “acelerándose en las primeras semanas del próximo año”.
En tanto, Pascal Soriot, director ejecutivo de AstraZeneca, aseguró que confia en que la vacuna demuestre la efectividad de su fármaco, como en el caso de las otras farmacéuticas.
“Hoy es un día importante para millones de personas en el Reino Unido que tendrán acceso a esta nueva vacuna. Ha demostrado ser efectiva, bien tolerada y más fácil de administrar, y es suministrada por AstraZeneca sin lucro. Quisiéramos agradecer a nuestros colegas en AstraZeneca, la Universidad de Oxford, al gobierno británico y a las decenas de miles de participantes de los ensayos clínicos”, declaró mediante un comunicado.
Cabe mencionar que miles de ciudadanos ingleses ya han recibido la vacuna desarrollada por Pfizer y BioNTech, que consiste en una inyección inicial y un refuerzo administrado 21 días después.
