Steven Brandenburg, un farmacéutico de Wisconsin, Estados Unidos, convencido de que el mundo estaba “derrumbándose” arruinó cientos de dosis de la vacuna de Moderna contra el coronavirus.
Según declaró ante la justicia local, creía que las inyecciones provocarían mutaciones en el ADN de la gente. El hombre de 46 años fue detenido el 30 de diciembre, pero en las últimas horas quedó en libertad bajo fianza.
El hombre de la salud, que trabajaba en un hospital, cortó la refrigeración de 57 frascos de la vacuna que equivalen a 500 dosis y el centro de salud administró algunas de ellas antes de darse cuenta de que se habían estropeado, según informó el centro médico Advocate Aurora Health.
El detenido admitió que había sacado intencionadamente del refrigerador esas dosis de la vacuna de la farmacéutica Moderna, que recomienda conservar sus viales a una temperatura de -20 grados centígrados.
La justicia de Wisconsin todavía no presentó cargos en contra de Brandenburg.
“Se había formado esta creencia de que no eran seguras”, dijo Adam Gerol, fiscal de distrito del condado de Ozaukee, durante una audiencia virtual.
Agregó que Brandenburg estaba molesto porque atravesaba un proceso de divorcio, y una empleada del centro médico Aurora dijo que el farmacéutico había llevado una pistola al trabajo en dos ocasiones.
De acuerdo con la declaración jurada que presentó su esposa el 30 de diciembre, cuando Brandenburg fue detenido, el hombre fue a su casa el 6 de diciembre y dejó un purificador de agua y dos suministros de alimentos para 30 días, y le dijo que el mundo se estaba “derrumbando” y que ella estaba negada. Señaló que el gobierno de EE.UU. planeaba ciberataques e iba a apagar la red eléctrica.
El farmacéutico se enfrenta a posibles cargos que tienen penas de cárcel, como los de poner en peligro la seguridad ajena en primer grado, adulterar un medicamento con receta y causar daños criminales a una propiedad.
Brandenburg quitó la refrigeración durante dos noches consecutivas, las del 24 y 25 de diciembre, y fue el sábado 26 cuando el hospital se dio cuenta de que habían estado a temperatura ambiente y las desechó, según el presidente del grupo médico Aurora, Jeff Bahr.
Los empleados del hospital administraron 57 de esas dosis antes de darse cuenta del problema, y notificaron a los pacientes que las recibieron de que las vacunas que les suministraron no son dañinas, pero sí pueden ser “menos eficaces o no tener eficacia”, afirmó Bahr en una rueda de prensa.
