¿Alguna vez viste un superrayo? Estos fenómenos atmosféricos, famosos en películas de terror, son tan poderosos como inusuales. Ocurren durante tormentas eléctricas, al igual que los rayos; pero, a diferencia, presentan una frecuencia menor de 1%. En comparación de los rayos convencionales, la energía que liberan los ‘superbolts’ —como también se conocen— puede ser hasta 1.000 veces mayor. Recientemente, un equipo descubrió por qué.
Para conocer más del origen de los superrayos, investigadores de la Universidad de Jerusalén (Israel) y de la Universidad de Washington analizaron información sobre rayos que ocurrieron entre 2010 y 2018, a nivel mundial.
¿Por qué los superrayos son tan poderosos?
Las tormentas cercanas a la superficie originan la creación de rayos de mayor energía porque la distancia más corta implica menos resistencia eléctrica y una corriente más alta, de acuerdo con un artículo de la Unión Geofísica Americana (AGU) al respecto.
El descubrimiento coincide con las condiciones de los lugares donde ocurren estos fenómenos con más frecuencia: el océano Atlántico nororiental, el mar Mediterráneo y la meseta del Altiplano (entre Perú y Bolivia).
