Obama pide a los alcaldes de EE.UU que revisen sus «políticas sobre el uso de la fuerza»
El ex presidente alentó a los jóvenes a seguir manifestándose en contra del racismo y la brutalidad policial. Y afirmó que hay un «cambio de mentalidad».
El ex presidente Barack Obama pidió este miércoles a todas las ciudades y alcaldes de Estados Unidos que revisen sus «políticas sobre el uso de la fuerza» y se comprometan a poner en marcha reformas tras la muerte de George Floyd a manos de la policía de Minneápolis, un caso que desató protestas a nivel mundial.
Al mismo tiempo, alentó a los jóvenes que lideraron las manifestaciones a continuar, para asegurarse de que producen cambios. Y opinó que el movimiento refleja un «cambio de mentalidad» inédito en la historia del país.
Obama llamó a la vez a las comunidades estadounidenses a «cambiar la forma en que hacen uso de la fuerza desde dentro». «Sabemos que hay reformas específicas que, si se implementan, generarían la confianza suficiente, salvarían vidas e impedirían que aumentase el crimen», aseguró.
Para el ex mandatario, las protestas y disturbios registrados con motivo de la muerte de Floyd son una «oportunidad increíble» para que los estadounidenses «despierten» y sean conscientes de los «desafíos y problemas estructurales a los que se enfrenta la sociedad».
«A pesar de lo trágico de estas últimas semanas y de las dificultades y del temor que supone la incertidumbre, esto también ha supuesto una oportunidad para abrir los ojos», afirmó el ex mandatario demócrata, y especificó que ahora existe en Estados Unidos «una oportunidad para trabajar juntos y cambiar el país para que esté a la altura de sus ideales».
El que fuera el 44º presidente de Estados Unidos quiso mandar un mensaje directo a la población afroamericana del país: «Quiero hablar directamente a los jóvenes de color de este país que han presenciado demasiada violencia, una violencia que muy a menudo ha venido de gente que supuestamente debía protegerles. Quiero que sepan que ustedes importan».
«Quiero que sepan que sus vidas importan, que sus sueños importan. Cuando vuelvo a casa y miro a mis hijas, Sasha y Malia, y a mis sobrinos, veo ese potencial sin límites que sigue floreciendo», afirmó.
En este sentido, remarcó que «deben poder cometer errores sin tener que preocuparse de lo que les va a pasar» y aplaudió a todos aquellos que han salido a las calles pacíficamente para protestar contra las injusticias. «Espero que a pesar de lo sucedido tengan fe. (…) Ustedes tienen el poder de hacer que las cosas sean mejores y habéis hecho que todo el país sienta que hay algo que va a cambiar», sostuvo.
Obama ya había condenado estos días la brutalidad policial a través de las redes sociales, donde ha recalcado la importancia de ofrecer solucione políticas para atender las demandas y reivindicaciones de los manifestantes.
