Los científicos revelan: ¿a qué edad somos más felices?
¿Podría haber un número mágico en el cual la felicidad alcance su cenit? Recientemente, un grupo de científicos en Alemania y Suiza se embarcó en la misión de descubrirlo.
Los niños antes de la pubertad son más felices por término medio, igual que los adultos antes de llegar a muy mayores: este es el resultado de un estudio publicado ahora por un equipo internacional de investigación en la revista en lengua inglesa Psychological Bulletin.
Según el estudio, la satisfacción general con la vida de los encuestados disminuyó entre los 9 y los 16 años, aumentó ligeramente hasta los 70 y volvió a disminuir hasta los 96 años.
Sin embargo, investigaciones previas sobre esta aparentemente simple pregunta han generado un extenso debate. Por ejemplo, según informa IFL Science, una teoría que ha atraído mucho interés es la llamada «forma de U de la felicidad», que sugiere que la satisfacción alcanza su punto máximo en la juventud y en la vejez, con un declive significativo durante la mediana edad. Algunos la han interpretado como evidencia de la crisis de la mediana edad, mientras que otros tienen dudas al respecto.
Una perspectiva más completa
Así, el nuevo estudio se propuso arrojar luz sobre este tema al considerar múltiples aspectos del bienestar subjetivo y analizar datos de diversas naciones y culturas. Esto tenía como objetivo brindar una perspectiva más completa sobre la cuestión.
«Nos centramos en los cambios en tres componentes centrales del bienestar subjetivo: Satisfacción vital, estados emocionales positivos y estados emocionales negativos», explicó Susanne Bücker, autora del estudio.

Los investigadores atribuyen el ligero descenso de la satisfacción vital entre los 9 y los 16 años, entre otras cosas, a la evolución que provocan los cambios en el propio cuerpo y en la vida social durante la pubertad. En la edad adulta muy avanzada, todos los componentes del bienestar subjetivo tendieron a empeorar en lugar de mejorar.
«Esto podría estar relacionado con el hecho de que, en las personas muy mayores, el rendimiento físico disminuye, la salud suele deteriorarse y los contactos sociales disminuyen; entre otras cosas, porque los compañeros mueren», explicó Bücker.
«Patrón de desarrollo favorable»
Los estados emocionales positivos mostraron un declive general desde los 9 hasta los 94 años, mientras que los estados emocionales negativos fluctuaron ligeramente entre los 9 y los 22 años, luego disminuyeron hasta los 60 y después volvieron a aumentar.
«En general, el estudio reveló un patrón de desarrollo favorable durante gran parte de la vida cuando nos fijamos en la satisfacción vital y los sentimientos negativos», resumió Bücker, quien subrayó la necesidad de fomentar el bienestar subjetivo con sus diversos componentes, especialmente en las fases finales de la vida.
