La OMS será investigada por su respuesta ante la pandemia de COVID-19
Mientras la organización recibe el apoyo de la Unión Europea, China y Rusia, EE.UU. arremete contra ella y cerca de 200 países firman una evaluación independendiente a la OMS
Los 194 países miembros de la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS), entre ellos Estados Unidos y China, adoptaron este martes una resolución que prevé una “evaluación independiente” de la respuesta de esa agencia de la ONU a la pandemia del nuevo coronavirus.
Este texto aprobado por consenso prevé lanzar “lo más pronto posible un proceso de evaluación imparcial, independiente y completa” de la acción internacional coordinada por la OMS ante la pandemia, incluyendo las decisiones de la organización durante el desarrollo de la crisis.
La OMS y su director general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, están bajo presión constante de Estados Unidos, que le reprocha una mala gestión de la epidemia, que deja cerca de 320.000 muertos en el mundo desde que apareció el virus en diciembre pasado en China.
Acusando a la OMS de ser una “marioneta de China”, donde brotó el virus a fines de 2019, el presidente estadounidense, Donald Trump, amenazó el lunes con congelar indefinidamente el financiación a esa agencia de la ONU e incluso con retirar la membresía de su país si no hacía “mejoras sustanciales” en 30 días.
En respuesta, el gobierno chino acusó este martes a Trump de utilizar a China para «eludir sus obligaciones» ante la OMS.
Por su parte, la Unión Europea (UE) expresó este martes su apoyo a la OMS tras la amenaza de Donald Trump, mientras que Rusia criticó el martes los intentos de Estados Unidos de “quebrar” a la OMS.
El director general de la OMS había asegurado el lunes que la organización dio la alarma “rápidamente” y que lanzará una investigación “independiente” sobre la respuesta al brote «lo más pronto posible en el momento apropiado.
