Huracán Iota sube a categoría 5 y siembra el terror en Nicaragua y Honduras
“Se esperan vientos extremadamente peligrosos y marejada ciclónica amenazante a la vida a lo largo de la costa noreste de Nicaragua y este de Honduras”, dijo el centro Nacional de Huracanes (NHS).
Iota, que la madrugada de este lunes se intensificó hasta convertirse en un huracán de categoría mayor, alcanzó esta mañana la categoría 5, la máxima en la escala Saffir Simpson, mientras se aproxima a Centroamérica, donde se prevé toque tierra esta noche, informó el Centro Nacional de Huracanes (NHC) de EEUU.
En su boletín de las 15.00 GMT, el NHC informó que el huracán presenta vientos máximos sostenidos de 260 kilómetros por hora (160 m/h) cuando se acerca a Nicaragua y Honduras.
Se espera que el ciclón, que avanza con vientos de más de 250 kilómetros por hora según el Centro Nacional de Huracanes (NHC) de Estados Unidos, arremeta contra el Caribe centroamericano, entre Nicaragua y Honduras.
En la misma región que dos semanas atrás sufrió el violento embate del huracán Eta, que dejó más de 200 muertos y 2,5 millones de afectados en el istmo.
“Se espera que Iota continúe intensificándose rápidamente y podría ser un catastrófico huracán categoría 5 al acercarse esta noche (del lunes) a la costa de Centroamérica”, indicó el NHC en un reporte.
Advirtió que se esperan “vientos extremos y tormentas que amenazan la vida a lo largo de partes del noreste de Nicaragua y este de Honduras”.
La evacuación masiva de las comunidades nicaragüenses de Karatá, Wonta, Wawabar, golpeadas por Eta, saturó los refugios, que el domingo recibieron aún más personas ante la amenaza de Iota, dijo a la AFP Eufemia Hernández, coordinadora de uno de los albergues en la universidad Uraccan.
“Son muchas familias grandes (….) este albergue está demasiado lleno, no tienen platos, vasos, cucharas, ni alimentos. No cocinamos nada porque es demasiada gente”, admitió Hernández.
El noreste de Nicaragua, una región extensa y poco poblada, con habitantes de las etnias miskito, sumos, garífonas, creole y mestizos, recibió el 3 de noviembre el impacto del huracán Eta, cuyos efectos aún no terminaban de ser asimilados cuando surgió Iota, la tormenta 31 de la temporada.
