Gorilas de zoológico de San Diego “vencen” al coronavirus
El zoológico de San Diego informó que los gorilas que habían padecido coronavirus a principios de mes se recuperaron favorablemente.
El zoológico de San Diego, California, informó que los gorilas que habían dado positivo a SARS-CoV-2, el cual provoca la enfermedad Covid-19 en humanos, se recuperaron de manera favorable.
El 6 de enero, dos gorilas habían presentado síntomas, y tras realizarse una prueba a través de heces fecales de los gorilas se determinó poner en cuarentena al grupo de primates.
De manera preliminar se informó que el virus habría llegado a los gorilas a través de un trabajador del zoológico que era asintomático pero, tras realizar pruebas, el zoológico detectó que estaba infectada por una cepa señalada como “altamente contagiosa” en California.
El recinto detalló que ocho de los gorilas ya comen, beben e interactúan de manera habitual, lo que les hace pensar que van hacia una recuperación completa, gracias al trabajo del equipo veterinario y otros colaboradores que dieron atención a los primates enfermos.
“Los gorilas han permanecido bajo estrecha observación desde el diagnóstico, cuando algunos mostraron síntomas que incluían tos leve, congestión, secreción nasal y letargo intermitente”, informó el zoológico de San Diego.
Además, Winston, el gorila más longevo del lugar, tuvo un tratamiento especial, porque presentó algunas complicaciones como letargo, tos, neumonía y enfermedad cardíaca.
“Winston fue sometido a un examen de diagnóstico bajo anestesia y los veterinarios confirmaron neumonía y enfermedad cardíaca. Tras consultar con especialistas, se inició el tratamiento, que incluía medicamentos para el corazón, antibióticos y terapia con anticuerpos monoclonales”.
El zoológico anunció que ya planea aplicar una vacuna contra el coronavirus que es de uso no humano, para cuidar a los animales del también parque safari de San Diego.
