Estuvo 16 años en prisión siendo inocente, fue exonerado y un policía lo mató en un retén
La víctima se preparaba para estudiar en la universidad y comprar una casa, tras comprobarse que era inocente. Acababa de visitar a su madre cuando el agente le quitó la vida.
Leonard Cure, que había pasado 16 años en la cárcel siendo inocente y fue exonerado en 2020, murió abatido por un policía en un retén en Georgia, Estados Unidos. Supuestamente el agente tuvo que dispararle porque se puso “agresivo”.
La víctima, que era afroamericana, había sido condenada en 2003 por robo a mano armada, pero tras volver a investigar el caso, se convirtió en 2020 en la primera persona en ser exonerada por la Unidad de Revisión de Condenas de la Fiscalía de Florida.
Luego de ser declarado inocente, en junio de 2023 se aprobó para este hombre de 53 años una indemnización de 817.000 dólares.
Según la Oficina del Fiscal de Florida, desde que fue liberado, Cure trabajaba en seguridad, tenía planes para ingresar a la universidad para así conseguir un empleo en producción de radio y estaba a punto de comprar su primera casa.
¿Cómo asesinaron al hombre que había sido declarado inocente?
Cure “agredió al agente”, quien utilizó un táser contra el ciudadano, que seguía presuntamente enojado por el arresto. Por esto, según la oficina estatal, el uniformado sacó un arma y le disparó fatalmente.
“Lenny era una gran persona que ya había perdido 16 años de su vida en un encarcelamiento injusto. Y ahora esto. Él y su familia merecían algo mejor. La vida de Lenny importaba. Estamos completamente devastados”, escribió Proyecto Inocencia de Florida en su página web.
El fiscal estatal de Broward, Harold F. Pryor, sostuvo en un comunicado que «el Leonard que conocíamos era una persona inteligente, divertida y amable”.
