Estados Unidos abandonó oficialmente este miércoles el acuerdo de París sobre cambio climático y su posible regreso al acuerdo dependerá del resultado en las elecciones presidenciales que aún están por definirse.
Desde hace tres meses, Donald Trump anunció que se separaría del acuerdo de París y se hizo efectiva este miércoles, mientras seguía el recuento de los votos para determinar si Trump sigue en el poder.
La separación, de uno de los países más contaminantes del mundo, se provocó cuando vivieron un momento de incertidumbre sobre el nuevo presidente electo. Por ejemplo, Joe Biden prometió que si ganaba devolverá a Estados Unidos ese pacto para combatir la crisis climática; además propuso un plan de 1.7 billones de dólares para que Estados Unidos llegue a un neto de cero emisiones en 2015.
Sin embargo, si no es así, Trump continuará así, y la iniciativa para frenar el calentamiento global tendrá que seguir sin la mayor economía del mundo.
Desde que Trump asumió la presidencia, ha retirado a EUA de varios pactos y foros multilaterales, entre ellos el nuclear con Irán. Además del consejo de derechos humanos de la ONU y la Organización de Naciones para la Educación, Ciencia y la UNESCO.
La clave de este plan será que Biden cumpla su promesa de estímulo económico masivo y creación de empleo.
