El obispo auxiliar de Los Ángeles es asesinado a balazos
Según la Archidiócesis de Los Ángeles, la muerte del obispo David O’Connell se investigó como ‘sospechosa’, pero después se ha determinado que fue un homicidio.
El obispo auxiliar de Los Ángeles (Estados Unidos), David O’Connell, murió el sábado a balazos y la policía considera que lo sucedido fue un homicidio, indicó este domingo la arquidiócesis de esa ciudad.
«Estamos profundamente conmocionados y entristecidos por esta noticia», indicó en esa nota el arzobispo de Los Ángeles, José H. Gómez.
El Departamento de Policía de la ciudad recibió una llamada de emergencia hacia las 13.00 hora local del sábado. Cuando los agentes llegaron se encontraron el cuerpo de O’Connell sin señales de vida y fue declarado muerto en el lugar de los hechos.
Estaba en la habitación de una casa y tenía una herida de bala en el torso que todavía sangraba.
Determinaron que fue homicidio
Al principio su muerte se investigó como «sospechosa», pero después se ha determinado que fue un homicidio, según el arzobispado.
«Su legado seguirá vivo», señaló este domingo la Policía de Los Ángeles en Twitter.
O’Connell nació en Irlanda en 1953 y fue nombrado obispo auxiliar de Los Ángeles por el papa Francisco en 2015.
Estaba destinado en esa archidiócesis desde 1979 y era el presidente allí de un grupo de trabajo interdiocesano encargado de coordinar la ayuda de la iglesia a niños y familias de Centroamérica.
