Dos jóvenes en Estados Unidos mueren al ser alcanzados por un árbol y un rayo en medio de tormentas
Las víctimas de las tormentas en Estados Unidos tenían 15 y 28 años. En la costa este del país, desde Alabama hasta Nueva York, donde 600.000 personas se quedaron sin electricidad, se emitieron alertas por riesgos de tornados.
Por lo menos dos personas han muerto y miles de personas se quedaron sin electricidad este martes 8 de agosto en el este de Estados Unidos, tras las violentas tormentas que azotaron la casi totalidad de la región.
Más de 1.700 vuelos interiores fueron anulados y más de 8.000 sufrieron retrasos el lunes debido a las condiciones meteorológicas, indicó la página web FlightAware.
Un hombre de 28 años murió en Alabama tras ser alcanzado por un rayo en el estacionamiento de un polígono industrial, informó una cadena local de ABC. Y en Carolina del Sur, un adolescente de 15 años murió tras la caída de un árbol frente a la casa de sus abuelos, informó una cadena local de CBS.
Cerca de 600.000 personas estaban sin electricidad el martes en la mañana en la costa este, según la página web poweroutage.us.
El NWS advirtió de un riesgo de crecidas repentinas en Washington y en las ciudades de Arlington y Alexandria en la Virginia vecina hasta las 02H45 del martes (06H45 GMT).
Las tormentas coinciden con las altas temperaturas registradas en el sur de Estados Unidos, concretamente en Texas, Luisiana y Florida, donde se prevé que las temperaturas lleguen este martes a los 42 grados centígrados.
Los científicos aseguran que el cambio climático amplifica la intensidad y la frecuencia de los fenómenos meteorológicos extremos en el mundo.
Y es que, según el programa europeo de seguimiento del cambio climático Copernicus, el pasado mes de julio la temperatura del planeta superó en 1,5 grados centígrados la media del periodo preindustrial (1850-1900). Además, anticipa que el calentamiento se agravará en los próximos meses a causa del fenómeno El Niño.
Para la directora adjunta de Copernicus, la científica Samantha Burgess, este dato, “aunque solo sea temporal, demuestra la urgencia de realizar esfuerzos ambiciosos para reducir las emisiones mundiales de gases de efecto invernadero, que son el principal motor de estos récords”.
