Demandan a Robinhood por el suicidio de un joven que creyó haberse arruinado invirtiendo en bolsa
El corredor de bolsa amateur se quitó la vida por pensar erróneamente que había perdido más de 700.000 dólares en la app favorita de los foreros de Reddit.
La aplicación de trading Robinhood, la preferida por los foreros de Reddit que protagonizaron el frenesí bursátil contra los grandes fondos en Wall Street, vuelve a ser noticia esta semana por el suicidio de un joven que creyó erróneamente que había perdido más de 700.000 dólares invirtiendo a través de la app.
La familia del fallecido, un corredor de bolsa amateur llamado Alex Kearns, ha decidido demandar a Robinhood Financial.
Los familiares de la víctima alegan que las prácticas comerciales de la popular plataforma bursátil condujeron “directamente” al joven a quitarse la vida, por lo que ayer lunes presentaron ante un tribunal estatal del condado de Santa Clara, en California, una demanda contra la famosa app en nombre de los padres y la hermana de Alex Kearns por homicidio culposo. Además, acusan a la plataforma de imposición negligente de angustia emocional y prácticas comerciales injustas.
Según la demanda
Robinhood advirtió al joven que debía comprar 700.000 dólares en acciones como resultado de una operación de opciones.
El joven fallecido era estudiante de la Universidad de Nebraska-Lincoln, tenía 20 años cuando se quitó la vida después de haber entendido mal una posible pérdida económica tras una operación de opciones sobre acciones.
En la demanda, los padres y la hermana de Kearns afirman que Robinhood empleó “tácticas y estrategias agresivas para atraer a inversores inexpertos y poco sofisticados como Kearns, para correr grandes riesgos con el atractivo de obtener beneficios tentadores».
La familia también reprocha a Robinhood que ofrezca poca o ninguna orientación de inversión a sus usuarios, y su servicio al cliente se limite a responder con correos electrónicos automatizados. También ha trascendido que Kearns recibió mensajes enviados desde Robinhood la noche del pasado 11 de junio, informándole de que su cuenta estaba restringida y que debía comprar 700.000 dólares en acciones como resultado de una operación de opciones, según la demanda.
Como consecuencia, la cuenta de Kearns quedó con un saldo negativo de 730.000 dólares por una operación que el joven pensaba que estaba limitada a una pérdida máxima de 10.000 dólares.
Kearns, desesperado por las respuestas de la app, envió varios correos electrónicos al servicio de atención al cliente, pero solo recibió respuestas generadas de manera automática, según la demanda. Unas horas más tarde, recibió otro correo electrónico de Robinhood instándole a depositar más de 178,000 dólares en el plazo de siete días para comenzar a cubrir el saldo negativo de su cuenta.
