Covid-19 podría provocar tartamudez y otros problemas neurológicos: científicos
Una neurocientífica de la Universidad de Michigan indicó que el habla es una de las acciones “más complejas que los humanos realizan” y “depende de un cerebro que funcione bien”.
El estudio publicado por la revista Scientific Report menciona que los pacientes que sobreviven a Covid-19 pueden desarrollar tartamudez, entre otros problemas neurológicos.
Los especialistas recogieron casos y estudios para reunirlos en su investigación, donde mencionan el caso del residente de Houston, Texas, identificado como Patrick Thornton, quien perdió su voz durante la enfermedad a mediados de agosto, pero cuando la recuperó, comenzó con tartamudez.
Las causas de la tartamudez, según Soo Eun-Chang, neurocientífica de la Universidad de Michigan, puede ser provocada debido a la respuesta inflamatoria al Covid-19.
“El habla es uno de los comportamientos del movimiento más complejos que los humanos realizan”, dijo.
“Hay literalmente 100 músculos involucrados que tienen que coordinarse en una escala de tiempo de milisegundos, por eso es una hazaña significativa”, agregó.
El proceso depende de un cerebro que funcione bien, por ello la tartamudez es uno de los síntomas neurológicos, así como la fatiga, alteraciones de memoria, psicosis y manía, que el Covid-19 puede provocar.
De acuerdo con Scientific Report, hay dos estudios, uno con la participación de 153 pacientes en Reino Unido y otro con más de 200 enfermos en Italia, que fue publicado en un portal de preimpresión.
En ambos estudios se destacaron que aproximadamente la tercera parte de todos los pacientes tuvieron problemas neurológicos.
“Hay un espectro muy amplio de manifestaciones neurológicas de Covid-19″, dijo Thomas Pollak, neuropsiquiatra en King’s College de Londres y coautor del estudio británico.
Los problemas pueden aparecer después de que el virus provoque que el sistema inmunológico produzca anticuerpos peligrosos, entre otras causas.
“Estas proteínas se unen no solo al virus, sino a otras proteínas en el cuerpo también, o bien interrumpiendo sus funciones, o bien desencadenando un ataque inmune a las células”, dice el artículo.
