Confinamiento por Covid-19 provocó un aumento en la temperatura del planeta
La Tierra registró un aumento de 0.03° C de temperatura durante el 2020 en gran medida, por la menor cantidad de aerosoles en el aire.
Un estudio publicado en la revista Geophysical Research Letters indicó que la Tierra tuvo un aumento de temperatura, en parte debido a la presencia de aire más limpio ocasionada por el confinamiento implementada en varios lugares del mundo.
Durante un breve periodo, las temperaturas en algunos lugares del este de Estados Unidos, Rusia y China fueron entre 0.3 y 0.7 grados Celsius más cálidas.
Esto se debe a la menor cantidad de partículas de hollín y de sulfatos procedentes de los tubos de escape de los automóviles y de la quema de carbón, que normalmente enfrían la atmósfera temporalmente al reflejar el calor del sol.
El planeta estuvo 0.03° C más cálido en 2020 porque el aire tenía menos aerosoles, a diferencia del dióxido de carbono, un tipo de contaminación que se puede ver, encontró el estudio.
“Limpiar el aire puede en realidad calentar el planeta debido a que la contaminación (con hollín y sulfatos) produce un enfriamiento”, señaló Andrew Gettelman, autor principal del estudio.
Este efecto temporal de calentamiento es provocado por una menor cantidad de partículas y fue más fuerte en 2020 que el efecto de la reducción en las emisiones de dióxido de carbono, porque se debe a que el carbono se queda en la atmósfera durante más de un siglo con efectos a largo plazo, mientras que los aerosoles permanecen en el aire aproximadamente una semana.
Incluso, sin la reducción de los aerosoles, las temperaturas globales en 2020, estaba por superar el récord anual de calor, por la quema de carbón, petróleo y gas natural, y el efecto de los aerosoles pudo haber sido suficiente para ayudar a que este año fuera calificado como el más caluroso, según el sistema de medición de la NASA.
