En un caso que sacudió a Italia, la madre de Saman Abbas, una joven de 18 años asesinada en 2021 por negarse a un matrimonio arreglado, fue detenida en Cachemira, bajo control de Pakistán. La captura de Nazia Shaheen ocurrió el 31 de mayo de 2024, según informó una fuente oficial a la agencia de noticias EFE.
Un miembro anónimo de la Agencia Federal de Investigación (FIA) de Pakistán informó que Shaheen fue detenida y presentada ante un tribunal en Islamabad el pasado viernes. El proceso de extradición hacia Italia ha comenzado, donde enfrentará la justicia por su papel en el crimen.
Shaheen, junto a su esposo Shabbar Abbas, asesinó a su hija Saman en 2021. Ambos fueron condenados a cadena perpetua en diciembre del año pasado. Shabbar Abbas fue localizado en Pakistán y extraditado a Italia en septiembre de 2023, mientras que la madre permanecía en paradero desconocido hasta su reciente captura.
El trágico suceso se desarrolló en abril de 2021 cuando Saman Abbas desapareció de la casa de sus padres en Novellara, tras regresar para recoger sus documentos después de haber estado en una vivienda protegida por servicios sociales. La joven había denunciado que sus padres intentaban casarla a la fuerza con un primo mayor.
La Fiscalía italiana acusó a los padres de haber entregado a Saman a su tío, Danish Hasnain, para que la asesinara y ocultara su cuerpo. Hasnain fue detenido y condenado a 14 años de prisión por su participación en el asesinato.
El único miembro de la familia que quedó en Novellara fue el hermano de 16 años de Saman. Trasladado a un centro protegido, el joven reveló a las autoridades que su hermana fue asesinada por resistirse al matrimonio forzado y para evitar que se marchara nuevamente de casa, como había hecho meses antes.
En Pakistán, los matrimonios concertados son comunes y las mujeres que se oponen a estas uniones a menudo enfrentan violencia extrema. Cada año, cientos de mujeres son víctimas de ‘crímenes de honor’ por rechazar estos matrimonios.
La captura de Nazia Shaheen marca un paso significativo en la búsqueda de justicia para Saman Abbas, subrayando la importancia de combatir los crímenes de honor y proteger los derechos individuales.
