En un discurso pronunciado este miércoles (24.07.2024) ante el Congreso de Estados Unidos, el Primer Ministro israelí, Benjamín Netanyahu, hizo un llamado urgente para recibir un mayor suministro de armamento. Su objetivo es acelerar la campaña militar contra Hamás en la Franja de Gaza. Netanyahu aseguró que un aumento en el envío de armas permitiría concluir más rápidamente las operaciones militares contra el grupo palestino.
El Primer Ministro criticó recientemente a la administración de Joe Biden por su decisión de bloquear un envío de bombas a Israel, destacando que dicho retraso afecta la eficacia de la ofensiva en Gaza. A pesar de la presión, Netanyahu insistió en que no tiene planes de ocupar la Franja de Gaza y planteó la posibilidad de establecer una zona desmilitarizada en la región, gestionada por autoridades civiles palestinas pero bajo un estricto control militar israelí.
En su discurso, Netanyahu evitó abordar temas como la formación de un gobierno único para Gaza y Cisjordania o la creación de un Estado palestino independiente, asuntos que están en la agenda oficial de Estados Unidos. La invitación de Netanyahu a hablar ante el Congreso, realizada por el Partido Republicano, refleja el apoyo que algunos sectores políticos estadounidenses ofrecen a Israel, a pesar de las tensiones con la administración de Biden.
Durante su intervención, Netanyahu también agradeció al presidente Biden por su apoyo, llamándolo un «orgulloso sionista irlandés-estadounidense», en referencia a sus raíces irlandesas. El Primer Ministro destacó la visita de Biden a Israel después del ataque de Hamás del 7 de octubre pasado, considerándola un acto de solidaridad en un momento crítico.
Sin embargo, a pesar de su cercanía con Israel y su rol como principal proveedor de armamento, el gobierno estadounidense ha mostrado críticas hacia algunas de las tácticas de Israel, como los bombardeos en áreas densamente pobladas y las restricciones a la ayuda humanitaria en Gaza. La relación entre Biden y Netanyahu ha experimentado tensiones, especialmente después de la muerte de trabajadores de la organización World Central Kitchen durante un ataque israelí y la ofensiva en Rafah.
La visita de Netanyahu ocurre en un momento de agitación política en Estados Unidos, marcado por el intento de asesinato del expresidente Donald Trump y la reciente decisión de Biden de retirarse de la campaña de reelección. Biden ha señalado a la vicepresidenta Kamala Harris como su sucesora, pero ella no estuvo presente en el discurso de Netanyahu, lo que refleja las complejidades actuales en la política estadounidense.
