Un Día de Limpieza que Cambió Todo
Cherrie describe su rutina de limpieza como «trabajo duro» y admite que a veces «se esfuerza demasiado». Después de una jornada de pasar la aspiradora, lavar ropa y cambiar sábanas, se sintió mareada. Decidió descansar, pero su pareja, Jonny Morcam, la encontró más tarde en el suelo, rodeada de vómito.
El Derrame Espinal
Desesperado por ayudarla, Jonny la bajó desde su apartamento en Weymouth, Dorset, con la ayuda de un desconocido, y la llevó al hospital de Dorchester. Allí, los médicos descubrieron que tenía un pulmón colapsado, pero no podían determinar la causa exacta. El 25 de febrero, Cherrie fue inducida al coma y conectada a un respirador. Los médicos temían que no sobreviviera la noche, y su familia fue llamada para despedirse.
Un Despertar Milagroso
Increíblemente, después de nueve días en coma, Cherrie despertó, pero estaba paralizada del cuello hacia abajo debido a un derrame espinal, una condición rara que ocurre cuando el flujo sanguíneo a la columna vertebral se bloquea, causando daños a los tejidos y bloqueando los mensajes nerviosos. Aunque los médicos le dijeron que no podría volver a respirar por sí misma, Cherrie logró quitarse el tubo de respiración después de 13 días y comenzó a respirar por su cuenta. Actualmente, está aprendiendo a mover los dedos de los pies y espera seguir avanzando en su recuperación.
La Rutina de un Día Común
Cherrie recuerda que el día del incidente comenzó como cualquier otro, con su rutina habitual de limpieza. Se sintió mareada, algo que no era raro para ella debido a su baja presión arterial y un dolor de espalda intenso que había experimentado meses antes. «A veces, si me esfuerzo demasiado, me mareo un poco y tengo que sentarme», explicó Cherrie a The Sun. Su médico de cabecera había atribuido su dolor a un trastorno de propagación del dolor.
Síndrome de Ehlers-Danlos
Durante su estancia en el hospital, Cherrie se hinchó considerablemente, volviéndose irreconocible. Antes del derrame, Cherrie era una boxeadora activa, entrenando varias veces a la semana y enseñando clases de defensa personal. Ahora, lamenta la pérdida de su rutina de entrenamiento y la liberación que encontraba en el boxeo. Cherrie padece el síndrome de Ehlers-Danlos, una enfermedad que afecta su sistema muscular y articular, causando hiperflexibilidad y músculos muy tensos. Los médicos creen que esta condición pudo haber ejercido presión sobre los vasos sanguíneos de su cuello, provocando el derrame espinal.
Un Nuevo Capítulo
Después de tres meses en el hospital, Cherrie ha estado en casa durante dos meses, recibiendo cuidados a tiempo completo de su pareja Jonny. A pesar del dolor constante y los espasmos severos, ha logrado recuperar el movimiento en su cuello, algunos movimientos en el brazo y los dedos de los pies, y mantiene la esperanza de seguir mejorando. «No sé cómo será mi futuro ni cómo será mi recuperación», dijo Cherrie.
