Este viernes, las autoridades palestinas y el movimiento islamista Hamás informaron sobre la muerte de Mustafa Muhammad Abu Ara, un líder de Hamás en Cisjordania, mientras estaba bajo custodia israelí.
Abu Ara, de 63 años, falleció tras ser trasladado de una prisión en el sur de Israel a un hospital, según un comunicado conjunto de la Autoridad Palestina y el Club de Prisioneros Palestinos. Hamás lamentó su fallecimiento, acusando a Israel de «negligencia médica deliberada» y responsabilizándolo de su muerte.
Detenido en octubre, Abu Ara padecía serios problemas de salud. Durante su detención, fue sometido a tortura e inanición, según el comunicado de la Autoridad Palestina y la organización de derechos de los presos. Hamás expresó su dolor por la pérdida del líder y prisionero, afirmando que su muerte fue resultado de un trato negligente por parte de las autoridades israelíes.
El ejército israelí no ha emitido una respuesta inmediata a las solicitudes de comentarios de la AFP. Las autoridades palestinas han acusado a Israel de llevar a cabo una «guerra de venganza» contra los presos palestinos desde el inicio del conflicto en la Franja de Gaza.
El ejército israelí, por su parte, ha rechazado «completamente las alegaciones referentes al abuso sistemático de detenidos». La controversia sobre el trato a los prisioneros palestinos en Israel sigue siendo un tema sensible y de gran tensión entre ambas partes, mientras las acusaciones y defensas continúan desarrollándose.
