Fósil de T-Rex es encontrado por niños y puede mostrar por qué era ‘el rey de los dinosaurios’
El ejemplar, que se presume era adolescente, fue encontrado por unos pequeños en el norte de Estados Unidos.
Descubren Fósil Juvenil de Tiranosaurio Rex en Dakota del Norte
Un notable hallazgo ha capturado la atención de la comunidad científica y del público en general: el descubrimiento de un fósil juvenil de Tiranosaurio Rex, cariñosamente apodado «Teen Rex». Este fósil, uno de los pocos ejemplares juveniles disponibles para la investigación, fue desenterrado en las Badlands de Dakota del Norte por los hermanos Liam y Jessin Fisher, de 7 y 10 años, junto a su primo Kaiden de nueve, el 31 de julio de 2022.
El Dr. Tyler Lyson, del Museo de Denver de Ciencia y Naturaleza, quien dirige la excavación, explicó que los fósiles juveniles de T-Rex son extremadamente raros. «Solo hay un puñado de estos fósiles, y la mayoría están en manos de coleccionistas privados. Para la ciencia, solo hay disponibles tres o cuatro», señaló Lyson. Esta escasez se debe a que los restos de los jóvenes T-Rex eran a menudo devorados por otros animales, y los que lograban fosilizarse son difíciles de encontrar debido a su menor tamaño.
El Dr. Lyson estima que Teen Rex tenía entre 13 y 14 años al momento de su muerte, hace aproximadamente 67 millones de años. Esta edad es crucial para los paleontólogos, ya que se cree que corresponde a la fase de mayor crecimiento del T-Rex. Hasta ahora, se han descubierto y expuesto una tibia de 82 centímetros, las caderas, algunos huesos vertebrales y gran parte del cráneo, incluida parte de la mandíbula. «La pierna y el cráneo son esenciales. Con la pierna podemos hacer la histología y determinar el crecimiento, lo que es clave para entender la vida temprana de estos dinosaurios», explicó Lyson.
Con los huesos recuperados, los científicos calculan que Teen Rex pesaba alrededor de 1,632 kilogramos, medía 7,6 metros desde el hocico hasta la cola y se erguía a unos tres metros de altura, aproximadamente dos tercios del tamaño de un T-Rex adulto. Este descubrimiento tiene el potencial de proporcionar información valiosa sobre el comportamiento y desarrollo de los T-Rex juveniles, un área sobre la que los científicos solo pueden especular hasta ahora.
El lugar del hallazgo, las Badlands de Dakota del Norte, es conocido por su abundancia de fósiles. El Dr. Lyson, quien creció en esta región y encontró su primer fósil a los seis años, fue contactado por el padre de Liam y Jessin en el verano de 2022. Inicialmente, Lyson pensó que los niños habían encontrado un fósil de hadrosáurido, pero al llegar al sitio y localizar una parte de la mandíbula con dientes, se dio cuenta de que era un valioso Tiranosaurio Rex juvenil.
El descubrimiento fue rápidamente documentado por los cinematógrafos Andy Wood y David Clark, de Giant Screen Films (GSF). «Estar allí grabando cuando se determinó que era un Tiranosaurio fue increíble», comentó Wood. El proceso completo se ha convertido en el documental ‘T.Rex’, que será estrenado el próximo 21 de junio. Rodado en formato IMAX con animación e imágenes reales, y narrado por el actor Sam Neill de ‘Jurassic Park’, el documental se estrenará en Denver, coincidiendo con la apertura de una exhibición sobre el descubrimiento en el Museo de Denver. Liam, Jessin y Kaiden estarán presentes en el estreno.
