Dimiten jefes de productor de suplementos anticolesterol vinculados a decenas de muertes en Japón

Dimisión de Directivos de Kobayashi Pharmaceutical Tras Escándalo de Suplementos
Kobayashi Pharmaceutical, una destacada compañía japonesa con sede en Osaka, anunció el martes la renuncia de su presidente, Kazumasa Kobayashi, y su director general, Akihiro Kobayashi, en medio de un grave escándalo relacionado con sus suplementos anticolesterol. Esta decisión llega tras reportes de que estos productos podrían estar vinculados con la muerte de 80 personas.
El retiro de estos altos ejecutivos, quienes son miembros de la familia fundadora de la empresa, se produce en un esfuerzo por asumir la responsabilidad por los problemas surgidos con el arroz de levadura roja, un ingrediente clave en los suplementos en cuestión. El comunicado oficial de la empresa subraya que la dimisión busca «aclarar la responsabilidad de la dirección en relación con las cuestiones surgidas».
En marzo, Kobayashi Pharmaceutical retiró del mercado tres líneas de suplementos que contenían arroz de levadura roja tras descubrir que estos productos estaban contaminados con ácido puberúlico, una sustancia tóxica producida por un moho. La compañía también anunció que había identificado 80 casos de fallecimientos potencialmente relacionados con el consumo de estos suplementos.
El arroz de levadura roja, conocido en Japón como «beni koji», ha sido utilizado durante siglos en Asia tanto en alimentos y bebidas como en la medicina tradicional china. Este ingrediente contiene monacolina K, una estatina natural que ayuda a reducir el colesterol. Sin embargo, el uso de estos suplementos dietéticos ha sido asociado con problemas renales graves, que han llevado a la hospitalización de numerosos consumidores.
La situación ha generado un gran revuelo en la comunidad médica y entre los consumidores, llevando a la empresa a tomar medidas drásticas para enfrentar el impacto del escándalo y recuperar la confianza pública.
