En una decisión sorprendente, Matt Dawson, un destacado jugador de hockey australiano, ha optado por amputarse una parte de su dedo para asegurar su participación en los Juegos Olímpicos de París 2024. El atleta, de 30 años, hizo pública su drástica elección este viernes, revelando los sacrificios personales que está dispuesto a hacer por su carrera.
Dawson, quien formó parte del equipo australiano que obtuvo la medalla de plata en Tokio 2021, sufrió una fractura reciente en el dedo anular de su mano derecha. La lesión amenazaba con comprometer su capacidad para competir en la próxima cita olímpica.
En lugar de seguir el tratamiento convencional recomendado por los médicos —que incluía enyesar el dedo y permitir una recuperación gradual— Dawson decidió optar por una solución más radical: la amputación de la parte superior del dedo. La operación se realizó esta semana, permitiéndole continuar con su preparación para los Juegos.
«Esta decisión fue tomada con el consentimiento de mi cirujano, no solo para tener la oportunidad de competir en París, sino también para asegurar mi bienestar a largo plazo,» explicó Dawson a Channel Seven mientras se dirigía al avión que llevaría a la delegación australiana a Francia.
Dawson describió la amputación como «un pequeño cambio y un desafío emocionante». Esta decisión ha sido recibida con admiración por sus compañeros y entrenadores. Colin Batch, el seleccionador australiano, elogió la dedicación del jugador: «Este tipo de decisión no es algo que un entrenador pueda tomar por un jugador. Todo el crédito es para Matt, quien ha demostrado un nivel de compromiso excepcional para estar en París. Personalmente, no estoy seguro de si yo hubiera hecho lo mismo».
Australia, que perdió la final de Tokio contra Bélgica en una tanda de penales, se enfrentará a Argentina, campeona en Río 2016, el próximo 27 de julio en el torneo olímpico.
