La investigación, realizada en un laboratorio que simula las condiciones de presión de cabina de un avión, reveló que el consumo de alcohol durante el vuelo puede reducir los niveles de oxígeno en sangre y aumentar la frecuencia cardíaca, incluso en personas jóvenes y sanas. Estos efectos pueden ser más pronunciados en pasajeros mayores o con enfermedades preexistentes.
El estudio dividió a los participantes en dos grupos: uno en un laboratorio del sueño en condiciones normales de presión atmosférica y otro en una cámara de altitud que imitaba la presión de cabina. Se les pidió a los participantes que durmieran bajo diferentes condiciones, algunas veces consumiendo alcohol y otras no.
Los resultados mostraron que la combinación de alcohol y presión de cabina simulada llevó a una disminución en la saturación de oxígeno en sangre y un aumento en la frecuencia cardíaca durante el sueño. Además, se observó una reducción en el tiempo de sueño profundo en aquellos que consumieron alcohol.
Aunque el estudio tuvo limitaciones, como el tamaño reducido de la muestra y la exclusión de otros factores como la postura y la alimentación, sus hallazgos sugieren que el consumo de alcohol durante los vuelos puede representar un riesgo para la salud cardiovascular, especialmente en individuos con afecciones cardíacas o pulmonares preexistentes.
El investigador Esteban Ortiz, de la Universidad de las Américas, señaló que el tipo de alcohol consumido en el estudio puede tener un impacto significativo en los resultados y que otros factores, como la alimentación, también deben considerarse al evaluar los riesgos asociados con el consumo de alcohol durante los vuelos.
