Sherman Güity: el atleta paralímpico ejemplo de superación y entrega
Días después de sufrir un accidente en la autopista General Cañas en 2017, Güity, prometió destacar en las justas paralímpicas Tokyo 2020. Este lunes cumplió su palabra.
El año 2017 cambió de manera drástica la vida de Sherman Güity. El joven sufrió un accidente en la autopista General Cañas el viernes 25 de agosto, cuando conducía una motocicleta y aparentemente un autobús se le metió en su carril, provocando un percance en el que perdió parte de su pierna izquierda. A partir de ese momento, su vida cambió radicalmente.
Pese a lo ocurrido Güity siempre se mantuvo motivado. El 28 de agosto de ese mismo año el ortopedista Orlando Daley le comentó al atleta que en seis meses podría volver a correr, en aquel momento el velocista caribeño hizo una promesa que hoy lunes 30 de agosto de 2021 cumplió.
Este lunes, prácticamente cuatro años después, el paravelocista costarricense ganó la medalla de plata en la categoría de 100 metros planos T64 del atletismo en las justas olímpicas que se realizan en el país del sol naciente, tras cruzar la meta con un tiempo de 10.78 segundos.
Güity quedó en segundo lugar en la final, logrando la primera medalla paralímpica en la historia de Costa Rica.
El heat final del costarricense fue ante Johannes Floors, de Alemania; Jarryd Wallace de, Estados Unidos; Jonathan Gore, de Estados Unidos; Jonnie Peacook, de Gran Bretaña; Felix Streng de Alemania y Mpumelelo Mhlongo, de Sudáfrica.
La categoría de para atletismo T64 se refiere a los atletas que compiten en velocidad y tienen una amputación en la pierna.
El podio quedó de la siguiente manera:
Oro: Felix Streng (10.76).
Plata: Sherman Güity Güity (10.78).
Bronce: Jonnie Peacook ( 10.79).
